Picked up a barely used PTR-91 and am having trouble getting the bolt to fully close.  Finally got it to fire by manually loading the breech, slapping the bolt closed then inserting a loaded mag.  Fired about 5 rounds then another failure to go into battery.  So do I need a new recoil spring or what?

Not super familiar with those kinds of rifles but i'd start by giving it a good cleaning, especially the chamber.  I think you could use a .45 caliber brush in the chamber.

Next thing I'd look into is getting new mags.  These are cheap right now so buy as many as you can afford.

I agree with the above...

Really good cleaning

Try a few different mags.

If not box up and send to manufacturer.

I am going to try cleaning it but the thing looks pristine.  I don't think it's a magazine related problem because the bolt has trouble closing even on an empty gun.  Can't send it to PTR because it's one of the earlier JDL made ones.

Not all PTR 91s are the same.  I have 2 PTR 91 GIs and they run great.  I have seen older PTR 91s with issues - newer ones since they went to deeper flutes - not so much.  The only issues I have had is low bolt gap .013" on a new rifle and loading a mag with bolt closed and not having it strip the 1st round when cocking it, but that might be the system.  I have notice my trigger pull is not heavy as older PTR91s, SAR 8s, and HKs I have shot at the range.  Also, the 1st thing I do when getting a G3 type rifle is install a new HK locking piece from Robert RTG and I notice the bolt gap improves and the gradual loss over the next 1000 rounds is .002" or less.
