Decades ago I had the semi-automatic made by HK.  Really wish that I had kept that firearm.

I see that a firm named PTR91 is making a similar gun.  Anyone have experience with these?  They offer more models that I can figure out.  Which is most like the original HK?  How hard are these to disassemble and clean?  Do they work with cast bullets?

I have one of the original JLD TR-91's and it's been a fantastic rifle.

Never had a problem with it and it is one of my favorite rifles. Disassembly and cleaning is pretty easy, once you get the hang of how the rifle goes back together. There are a few things that might trip you up the first time, but once you do it once, it should be easy.

Never shot cast in mine, so I have no opinion about that.

The PTR91 "GI" has the the same features as an original HK91 with the exception of the wide forend. I have one and have been quite happy with it and it is every bit as good as the HK91 that I also foolishly sold!

IIRC, these are made on the old Portuguese HK tooling. You can buy with confidence by all reports...

The only thing I dont like about them is the ugly navy trigger group.

Decent rifles, just overpriced  by about  $250...............Gunbroker has a glut of ptr rifles.........They were selling briskly in the 850 to 900 range.......now around 1050 they just don't sell

I bought an early one back in 2004 for about $720 I think. Accurate high quality clone. I've move away from 7.62 because of costs, so I sold it a few years ago for $950.

But will they work with cast bullets?  How hard are they to clean if you use cast bullets?  Can you both cycle the action and get good accuracy with cast bullets?

And which of their numerous models would you recommend?

OP, you'll probably have better luck with your questions over here:

They are decent rifles.  The barrels were made by Thompson Contender IIRC.  They have a heavier profile than the original HK bbl, which was a bit more spindly.  Again IIRC the bbl is shorter than the original as well, and therefore the handguard as well.  Also, PTr changed the design of the chamber.  The PTR chamber has less fluting, either shallower or narrower, or both.  Cant speak to function under harsh conditions, but definitely does not chew up the brass nearly as much.  Not sure if it is reloadable.  Also supposedly yields a less violent and therefore more pleasant recoil impulse.  Cant speak from experience on this point.  havent fired a G3 or 91 in probably 15 years or more.  I have fired a PTR91 in the last 5 years, and it was nothing bad, commensurate with the weight.  I recall some of the HK 'fanboys' claiming the PTR had a better finish than any of the original HKs.  Thats probably debatable.  If you like the platform, it is worth the money in a 1000 dollar range. As to the forearm, I believe you can put a 93 forearm on them if you like the wide profile. Cant state that with any degree of certainty however.

Very nicely made, reliable, accurate rifles. I had a "K" version (16" barrel) with the telescoping stock.

It was very accurate and made for a really compact package.

Like all HK roller-delayed blowback .308s, though, it was heavy and recoiled pretty hard compared to my FALs. It also ran filthy. The tiny little waffle-iron butt pad sucked. I still don't understand why they're shaped that way and not the way the MP-5 telestock is.

The GI version uses standard G3/HK91 handguards. It also has the original barrel profile and proper chamber flutes.

I have a JLD PTR 91k and it can use the HK93 wide handguards.  I bought mine in '05 or '06 and it came with a HK bolt carrier, POF bolt head, and a JLD trigger pack.  The stock and aluminum handguard were made by JLD.  I'm not sure where the other parts originated.  I've heard the trigger housing was made by JLD, but I'm not really sure.  It gets really dirty but shoots everything I've put through it.  Mags are really cheap.  In fact I have so many mags for this one rifle that it makes me think I should pick up a real HK91 or something else that takes the same mags.

I'd pass on an H&K (or clone) if your intent is to reload. They're very hard on brass.

Had a JLD PTR91 a year or so ago. fired it a few times and it was very fun to shoot.
worked 100% while i had it, just get to expensive for me to feed and I traded it for something els.

good guns, the older JLD ones have chambers closer to the HK91 and will fire surplus ammo more reliably.. the newer ones by PTR INC.
like the commercial ammo better...they may have fixed that, im not sure.

the brass just looks bad, it reloads just fine.
