I am not for sure if this topic has been brought up before. What are the cons to illuminated reticles? Does the illumination drown out the target for long range shooting?

at night if the reticle doesn't have much adjustment range it can be a bit too bright. Any decent scope will be ok though...

I can't think of a downside so, tag.....

buddy of mine has a shitty one and the illumination doesnt match the reticle.  Works out great when you figure that out and you are shooting clays at 100 yards for 10 bucks each though.

I have quality ones and I also have cheap ones.

The cheap ones put a fuzzy glow to the reticle, not the best for shooting small groups/targets.
The quality ones are great, sharp and clean illumination.

+1 I have a BSA that is terrible. I have a couple of Leupolds and a Burris XTR that I could not be happier with.

Cheap versus inexpensive.  I have a couple of Belarusian POSP scopes I use on AKs that are relatively inexpensive but the illuminated reticle is very sharp/well defined.  The scopes are built like tanks and can take considerable abuse.
