I know, that's a very vague subject but I will clarify.

I currently have about 1200 Rounds of Norinco 55gr .223 ammo that I've been shooting out of my Mini 14. The main problem I have is that my barrel is a 1 in 7 twist and spins the bullets too fast for them to be worth using for purposes other than making a bang.

So currently I'm looking for a .223 rifle for varmint hunting with this ammo. My budget is minimal so I've been interested in the Rossi Wizard single shot. Does anybody have one of these? and are they worth it?

I don't need accuracy out past about 150 yards and rate of fire is not a concern (besides, you should only need 1 well placed shot). I'm not even considering a bolt action at this point, but it's not completely out of the question, I'm just curious if the Rossi would fit my needs.

Well the Rossi seems to go for $250-300. You get a rifle with interchangable barrels. Personally never was one for swapping barrels on a gun. Dont know why. Guess I like to set up a rifle for one cal.

That being said, you can get a Savage Axis bolt action for about the same price. Ive heard good things about the H&R varmints. Love my H&R in .357mag. A used Savage 11 will run a few bucks more.

The Norinco 223 ammo may not be good for anything other than range fodder. Even if you shoot it in a $350 1X9 or 1X10 AR15 match barrel, you may still get 2-4" groups. Try some 60gr TAP or Vmax. You may get acceptable results for your intended use for only the cost of a few boxes of ammo. Then again your using a Mini-14 which may average a 2-4" groups anyway. If you not worried about the hides then find a 69-77gr round that will shoot well in your rifle.

Trying to find a rifle to fit the ammo is kinda a backwards way of doing it. You may go through a few rifles trying to find one that will shoot it. Easier, and ususally cheaper, to find ammo to fit the rifle you already have.

I know it's back asswards to do it this way, but I got the crate of Norinco along with the Mini from my uncle. The Mini will shoot right around 1 MOA with the reloads I have and with the gas block shut off (I have a tunable one).

Where I stand now I can shoot a tighter group with my reloads at 100 Yards than I can with the Norinco at 10 Yards, and I know it's the bullet size because I bought a box of Wolf 55gr and it shot the same as the Norinco. Like I said, I'm not looking for a tack driver, just decently accurate out to 100-150 yards. swapable barrels is a plus for me since I hunt both small and medium game (using from .22lr to 20 gauge, and several in between).

If in the end the Norinco is useless it wouldn't bother me having spent the money on the Rossi, as I have been interested in them for a long time.

I would also agree to look into the savage bolt action, they are very accurate, reliable weapons. You should be able to pick up a used 20ga pump less than $175, if you need the 20ga too.

Norinco .223 is corrosive.

I never had any problems with their .223 with 90-93 head stamps.

Corrosive ammo is irrelevant. I don't know why people freak out about corrosive ammo. If you clean your firearms after every shoot (which I do, regardless of what kind of ammo I shoot) then there is no issue.

I have a 20 gauge pump already, I pointed that out due to the fact that with the Rossi I could just bring a 20 gauge barrel with me instead of another full sized shotgun.

Not sure of the twist but a saiga 223 would be a fun gun to blow through that ammo with.  I assume it is more designed to shoot that ammo well than your mini.  You can get them cheap and when the ammo is gone you still have a nice fun gun.  Get the 21" barrel model maybe if you want a more accurate rifle....

I'm not freaking out about corrosive ammo, I was merely informing. Every box of Norinco .223 I bought, was marked corrosive, and it was.

What about selling the norinco ammo and buying ammo for your mini that is more suitable?

I had a case of that norinco ammo and thought it was great.

Gives me an excuse to buy a new rifle.

If I had a rifle it worked with I'm sure I would like it too.

Go with the Stevens (AKA Savage) 200 in .223.  I believe Buds Guns has them in stock.  Damn cheap price, and then you will have tons of options available to you in the future if you want to upgrade it.
