Does anyone know if any of the AR10 type .308 rifles accept the M1A magazines?

Just seems it would be handy to get one that does if possible.

Thanks! Rafter

Armalite used to shave off the magazine retention tab of M14 magazines to get them to work in AR10 rifles.........also a few other changes.
That would render it unable to be used in the M14/M1A again.......

Are you sure about that? I remember reading the changes to make a M14 mag into an AR10 (gen I) and they were: 1) a different follower, had a little plunger that popped out to engage the BHO on an AR10. That made the follower not catch the BHO in a M14. 2) the feed limp had a little material removed from the front to enable reliable feeding in the AR10. The mag would still feed in a M14 though 3) a hole was drilled/cut into the side of the mag to engage the mag catch on the AR10. That was it and the mags could be swapped back and forth, only difference is the BHO didn't work on the M14s after mods. BTW Ar10 lowers were clearenced in the magwell (like an AR15) for the rear lug so I don't kow why they would be milled off.

Gen II mags, which are purpose built for the AR10s will not work in a M14 due to rear of the mag being made like an AR15 so they could ditch the plunger follower for one with a stamped catch. That did away with the rear lug so no go in a M14.

ETA: Armalite may have shaved the rear lugs off factory mags (came with rifle), I don't know. But their conversion kits allowed the mag to be used in a M14. Post this in the Armalite Ar10 forum and they'll set it straight.

Gen I mags had/have helf the tab cut but it keeps enough inorder to work in the M14, this was a requirement under the AB in order to prevent from being considered a new mag. The Gen II and Law enforecment only Gen I mags do not have the tab. You will have to hunt on the EE for used Geni mags.

Actually, I had mags that didn't have the tab shaved off and they worked well in both my M1A and my AR10.

No, his answer was wrong, and so is yours. The retention tab doesn't go anywhere. M14 mags converted (trim feedlips, cut back slot and mag catch hole) to AR10b work in both platforms you just need to swap the followers back.

Unmodified M14 mags work in the AR10 but you need to retain them with the sling.

During the AWB Armalite modified M-14 magazines three different ways.

1 - They cut a hole in the side of the magazine for the AR mag catch.

2 - They cut down the top of the locking lug on the back of the M-14 magazine.

3 - They designed their own follower that had a spring loaded plunger that stuck out the rear of the magazine when it was empty.

The plunger was needed to activate the bolt hold open on the AR. During the AWB the feds required that if a magazine was modified for use in more than one type of firearm, it had to still work in the original design. This was because it was illegal to manufacture new magazines that held more than 10 rounds. Once the AWB expired, Armalite designed a proper magazine and did away with the special followers. You can use any M-14 magazine in an AR-10. You have to cut a hole for the mag catch, and the M-14 follower won't hold the bolt open after the last shot.
