| I've had a hair for a good brush rifle recently. I'm a Ruger fan first and foremost and at first I was considering rebarreling a gunsite scout. I like the detachable mag for capacity but I've also despised it when carrying it for any distance. I like to be able to grip the rifle around the reciever area like you would a levergun. So I've got two primary options right now. Order a new compact laminate SS M77 w/ 16.5" barrel and have it rebored to .338 Federal. Then install NECG front barrel band and rear peep and probably an XS scout mount. I've got a super short lightweight package. Now option two is get a Ruger stainless .338RCM and order a black laminate stock for it(all my Rugers are SS/lam.) Perhaps add the peeps to the rear on it and ditch the factory rear sight. Only downside is I have abit more tube sticking out. I'm not too familiar with either cartridge but I'm a huge .338 Winmag fan and would like to keep it in the same cal. family. It will be mostly carried in the truck and also when I'm on my SxS for general use and hunting boar/bear in thick heavy Appalachian woods. So what are your thoughts between these two notions? |

Quoted:
The .338 Federal is the .308 necked up to 0.338" The .338 RCM is a proprietary case that has the performance of the .338-06 using a 20" barrel. I'm aware of the origins and ballistics of the two. I like the 16 barrel notion, however the RCM is pretty good as well. I'm trying to figure out which will meet my realworld goals best. |

Take the .338 Federal as you will never run out of brass to handload with (.243/.260/7-08/.308/.358). Anything proprietary is dicey. |
