So when money allows I'm going to buy a Remington Model 700 VTR in 223 and a Remington Model 700 Target Tactical in 308. No idea when I'll have the money. But I'm also going to need to buy two scopes, one for each. One fellow here has recommended a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50mm LR/T M1 w/Leupold rings/bases. But at over $1000 it is WAY out of my price range, particularly since I want two.
So I'm going to be just target shooting at a range of at most 100 yards. What moderately inexpensive scope would you recommend? |
| Leupod has several lines of less expensive scopes and there's a large number of manufacturers that make decent scopes for decent prices. Nikon, Burris, Weaver, etc. Since you didn't say how much you wished to spend it's kind of hard to make specific recommendations. Any decent 3X9-40 scope will allow you to do good target work at 100 yards. However, more magnification allows for more precise aiming. I recommend you choose a scope with fully coated optics, all lenses are coated for better light transmission and less reflection. Also, there's any number of different reticles available, take a close look at them, some are quite simple and others are very complex. Parallax adjustment is a very nice feature. Right off the top of my head, take a look a the Simmons 4-14x44 AETEC, decent glass for a decent price. I've got two on hunting rifles and they work just fine. They cost about $150.00. Lots of other opitions out there. |
| Bushnell 10x40 3200 (tactical) and weaver bases with quad-loc rings. cheap, simple and it works. Less than $250, iIf you get them on sale at Midway this month for $199 + shipping for the scope and get your rings/bases at the local wally-world for less than $25 a set. Just my 2 cents |
| You also may want to consider a Mueller APT, has a mildot reticle, target turrets, adjustable objective, 30mm tube, a good warranty and decent glass for 160.00...and another mention of the Weaver GS Tactical 3-10x40 at Midway. This has the benefit of mil/mil adjustments, a bit more cash, though, at 300.00. Many decent choices for smaller budgets, almost a decent scope for every price range. Good luck! |

Super Snipers are probably at the high end of what you're wanting to spend but they are worth it. I had one of those for quite a while. It was fitted on various rifles, including a Model 700 in .308 Win. Brilliant scope, and it did well at 600yds, which was the furthest I tested it to. It was exposed to heavy rain several times, but the clarity remained good. To be honest, at 100yds, the ret is on the thick side for these rifles. It is far from unusable, but I would have definitely preferred something finer. How about a Weaver T-36 or Sightron Target? Upper-end of $300 new, but S/H is a good option. You can also find the old Bausch & Lomb Elite 36x very cheaply here. It isn't easy to price these things exactly from the U.K, so hopefully that isn't too far off. They are high-magnification, but it's no bad thing if you're just shooting from a bench with an accurate bolt-action. |
