Is this entirely for preventing nicks and dings on the scope tube body, or does it serve some other purpose that helps the scope hold zero?

Helps the scope hold zero by ensuring that the rings are truly cylindrical.

Both rings need to be lapped relative to each other, to make sure they have a coincident axis.

Thanks.  I've been getting 1.5 to 2 MOA accuracy from my Tikka T3, and I think the factory rings are kind of on the cheap side and may be affecting it.  I'm looking at replacing them with Warnes and doing a full lapping job.  Now I just have to decide between permanent mount and QD.

Permanent, by doing so you remove another variable from the platform.

How critically important is it that torque on the rings screws be precisely the same?
