I am thinking about ordering a CMP H&R M1 Garand. Should I get the service grade or save up and order the CMP service Special version? I plan on using this rifle.

Either one will serve you well. If having a collectible rifle appeals to you than you may want to go with the service grade.

I've been reading that the service grades are really nice these days.  Aren't the special grades made up with new stock and new metal, not USGI?  Something to consider.

I have three service grades, and they are each almost "as new". Your thread now has me considering buying another...Not going to be available for too much longer you know (years wise), finite resource. F*&K Bill Clinton and his destructive zeal.

This is a description of the special grade from CMP's website:

CMP SPECIAL: (Excellent)
CMP's new grade of M1 Garand. This rifle consists of a new production stock and handguard set with CMP cartouche, a new production barrel and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. See item for details.
