Decades ago, I think, HK offered semi-automatic assault rifles in 223 and 308.  I believe that those were called g3's.  How similar are those guns to the current PTR rifles?

the g3 is the F/A version of the HK91 for the military.   the PTR is 1 of the better companies that make a copy of the HK91.  the .223 version is the HK93.

About a $16000 and a stamp difference for the G3.
More like a $1-2000 difference for the HK 91.

I have a PTR-91, you'll like them.

G3 Clones have paddle mag releases, HK91 clones dont.
The PTR does not have a paddle mag release. It may or may not have a chamber with the correct number of flutes to provide reliable extraction. I've "heard" the newer ones do; if so they are ok rifles, if you dont mind not having a proper mag release, and cheaper grade stock, grip housing, etc..

IMO, you can get a good G3 parts kit and compliance parts and have a gunsmith build it with either a heavy target barrel or a lighter military profile barrel that surpasses the PTR barrel offerings for not a lot more, and in some cases the same price as a PTR.
