I have a remington 722 .222 that my father gave me. I cannot get the safety to "safe" when the bolt is closed. If the bolt is open the safety moves freely.
Is this normal?

Not normal. You should be able to put it on safe with the bolt closed. You do have to have it off safe to open the bolt.

They will probably replace that trigger with a new one. If you don't care about keeping it vintage then no worries. If you are you might want to check with a local smith.
