Greetings,
I picked up a sporterized 1903 for use with my large cache of corrosive ammo. It has a double heat treat receiver and the value of the rifle has bottomed out- replaced stock, polished bolt, shiny polished (over polished) receiver, a barrel of mysterious origin (four groove) and barrel mounted open sights (aftermarket- unknown brand). The rifle has three (now plugged) holes in the side of the receiver (probably a Griffin & Howe side mount) and it used to have a Lyman 48 rear sight on it. Does anyone have a scope mount recommendation? S&K makes one that seems solid and is made specifically for the Springfield 1903. I am not afraid of drilling and tapping (I am not the first one to that party!). Also, what scope would you find appropriate? A fixed 4x? |

I'd put a straight tubed 1-4x or 1.5-5x on it.
It will give the best utility in the long run, especially if you decide to hunt with it. I assume the woods in New Hampshire are thick like in Minnesota? You may be able to find a scope mount that will fit the original side rail holes. No point in putting more hole in the old gal. Besides the Griffin and Howe, look at the old Weaver brand side mounts. |

I hunt in areas that range from Multiflora rose tangles, cedar swamps and jack fir thickets. The only time I get a long shot is when I can see out over a clearcut and suicidal deer are far and few between. I will have to look through my own collection of old stuff- I might have a scope that will fill the bill already. I used to have an ancient 2.5x Noske of all things. I don't recall what I did with it...
I spent more time scrubbing the bore last night and I have never seen a filthier rifle in my life. I resorted to JB Bore paste and the patches come out charcoal black. The lands in the barrel are starting to show more "relief" than they used to. I think I am getting down to the 1950s level of grime at this point. If rifles could talk I know this one would say: "I was not cleaned very often."
