I need to get some space between my scope (50mm objective) and the barrel, need approximately .020 clearance. What material can I use to get this clearance and do I place the shim just on the bottom ring or both upper and lower ring? Thanks for the help....Manny

I use USGI stripper clips that I take apart.  There is nice smooth brass inside them holding the rounds in place.  7.62 clips are thicker than the 5.56mm ones.

I buy these, the cheap ones, and cut off what I need for a shim.

ETA: In most cases I wouldn't advise shimming a scope .020" in the rings to raise it from the barrel. What rings are you using> do they mount directly to the upper or is there some sort of mount from rings to upper?

Is this on a AR? I just noticed that I'm not in the AR section.

The proper way is to use higher rings if we are talking about a regular set of rings being used here. I don't know if we are.

Burris Z Rings w/ Posi-Align inserts that allow raising of the scope within the rings without binding or denting the scope. It's not easy to form a .020 shim to the ring, then the scope doesn't fit properly in the rings and can slip or you can't get the rings together at all. Many Buba's have done it, but that doesn't make it the thing to do. If you just lay a shim at the bottom of the ring you will dent the scope when you tighten the rings.

Thank you for the reponse's. I think, as stated, the proper way is higher rings and that is what I will do - don't want to screw up a nice Leupold 3.5 x 10 x 50mm scope

You can buy a roll of shim material from Fastenal for about 12$.
It comes in various material and thickness. .005  010 .002   etc.
