First off, here's the situation.   I have 800 bucks.  Burning a hole in my pocket.  I have all the handguns I need. Everything from 22 to 44. My ruger charger works for pests.  I have a 6mm rem 700. It was a hand me down from my father so I should resist the felling I get to mod it.       I need a gun to fill other roles.

Thinking about 308 or larger.  Want to be able to take a black bear if my father in law invites me on a hunt.   It or the 6mm will be used for wv whitetail.   I don't hunt over 200 yards.
I'm looking for something easy to carry, like a short barrel guide/scout gun.  Bolt, semi, lever, or pump.   Gotta stay away from evil black rifle's lol.   They seem to scare the locals.   Or the ar10 would Be a shoe in.
Any tips or points in the right direction would be great.
Thanks guys.

I love the 4570 guide gun.  But how is 200 yards with it?  I know those heavy bullets drop fast?     The new one with the xs sights and rail is super sweet, and classy too!

Sub an "evil pink rifle" for the evil black rifle, and you can still get that AR-10.

IF you look enough you can findn .308 and larger B.A.R.'s for $800 lots of .30-06's out there. Good luck. The .300WSM is a good hard hitting round and actually uses a .308 bullet. Just food for thought.

Marlin in 45-70 or 444 would be just fine out to 200yds. - that's my vote.

I am thinking a 6.8 AR, and paint it some nice color...

CDNN has Hogue stocked, NIB, Howa 1500's in .270, .25-06, .308 (my choice), and .30-06 right now for $339.  This is an AMAZING deal on a good rifle.  With your $800 you could get one and put a nice piece of glass on it.

I've never checked out the howa's 1500s.   Ill have to check it out.       My father just got the 300wsm in a browning bolt gun.   It is a sweet shooter. And he reloads :)       just don't know how it would do in a short barreled gun.

I was tempted by the 30 30 but has decided to go bigger.  Between the 444 and the 4570 what one has better range?

They both have rainbow trajectories.  The 444 is an odd duck.  It truly is a pistol caliber.  The bullet selection for 444 loads suck at rifle velocities.  IMHO, the .45-70 is a much better bet in a lever gun, especially now with Hornady's pointed FTX bullets.  You can easily have a 200 yard gun.

I'm telling you, however, if you don't have a nice .308 bolt gun, I'd get that Howa.

This would be my suggestion. Even though its on the light side for the bigger bears, .308 is my favorite GP round.

That really isn't correct on either statement; this nonsense just keeps getting passed around and around. The 265FP is certainly not a pistol bullet and has been used on everything including moose. Barnes and Swift Aframes are available in 300grs. As for trajectory, if you can't shoot a 444 or 45-70 out to 200yds then you're not much of a shot. Hornady also makes the FTX (265gr) for the 444. The reality is there isn't a whole lot in it. (assuming you keep both loads at Marlin levergun pressures) I have one of each & it wouldn't matter to me which one was in my hand.

Have heard nothing but good things about the Savage Edge so far.  Its on my short list to buy right now.

Have seen them going for around $300 or so which would leave you with cash left over for optics and ammo.

hard to go wrong with a 308 bolt gun, for 800 should be no problem to find a real nice scoped one used (figure for every year old only 20 rds fired) a new marlin XS7 with glass, set one up for my brother in .270, 600$ total - very nice shooter or a savage etc

those are some good tips on bot rifles, but was looking for one with a short barrel.   18in or less.  i find it makes the rifle more practical.    i guess with the money i save i could get a smith to shorten it, but i dont know how that would work with the twist in the rifle.    a 45-70 guide gun might be my top pic at this point, mount a nice scout scope on it and i think it would get the job done.
thanks for all the help guys
