I would get Mueller's new APT for $25 more. It has a larger 30mm tube as well as tactical turrets. It also has a mildot reticle which is great for determining distance as well as for hold over. I couldn't imagine being without one now.

I had a Stevens in 223 that gun shot .3's regularly with my handloads and even turned in a few .2's. The best part about Stevens is they are exactly like a pre Accutrigger Savage so all parts will interchange. Another great thing about them is the fact you can change barrels and caliber in about 10 minutes with the tools that cost about $50. I replaced the 9 twist barrel that come with the Stevens with a 7 twist.

Everything on a Stevens/Savage can be worked on or replaced without a gunsmith as lng as you have the tools and basic mechanical skills. I tell people all the time that if they can change their oil/filter on their car then they can work on a Savage.

My only hesitation is that if i give it more tactical features, I'm going to want to build it into a tactical gun where all i'm concerned with is accuracy. I dont want that to be the point of this gun - simply a low budget centerfire that i can shoot soda can with.

I may consider handloading for it in the futue depending on how high .223 pries get
