CDNN has a big special on them and I am curious as to thoughts or reviews on these rifles. They are Mauser style. |

The 798 is nothing more than the Zastava Arms Commercial Mauser barreled action with a US made laminate stock. These are the old Interarms Mark X's.
Never liked the trigger or safety on them, but they are ok. Remington is getting rid of them to 'remake' their image. They also got rid of the 799 (old Mini-Mark X) and the Model 5. |

If they would have put a Model 70 Style Safety on those they would have done a lot better. The 700 and Model 7 don't have this. Adding one would have increased the price and these were 'value' guns. That's what the aftermarket is for. Yes, but most folk who would buy a Mauser style action would want a 3 postition safety cause that's what Mausers came with. A 2 position safety on the Model 700 and Model 7 is appropriate cause they are distant descendants of the M1917 and that came with 2 position safety. |

Go to a store and handle one. you will see they are absolute junk. Other than being a bolt action and cock on open they arent really anything like a mauser. I think you're thinking of the 710/770 line. The 798s are a M98 Mauser made at Zastava, as mentioned above. They are the same as the old Mark X and Herter's Mausers. Good guns, if not fancy. |

i want nothing to do with a 710/770 Quoted: If you want a modern, commercial Mauser 98 action, the Serbian built Remington is a pretty good gun. Like the model 5 it's made by Zastava, and stocked in the US. It's not a "fancy" gun. It's workmanlike. It's also a much better choice than the POS Rem 710/770. |

I've handled one and it looked ok except for the stock that Rem put on it. I kinda don't like laminated wood on what amounts to a commercial Mauser. Overall appearance seemed good but I wasn't happy with the feel of the bolt in the receiver. It felt too rough inside & too sloppy on lock up. It shouldn't have been anything that couldn't have been cleaned up with a little lapping & TLC, but I passed on it.
In general, something didn't feel right about it & the little voice said to put it back in the rack and walk away. MLG |

i'm getting a 799 in 7.62x39 from them.
i've always wanted a bolt gun in that caliber and this seemed worth it for the $389.99 price tag. wondering about optics options for it and thinking of something fixed power with maybe 6x magnification trying to keep the entire project under the $600 mark. |

I think that'll be a cool little gun! Check out the Weaver "classic" line for some nice fixed-power scopes. Either that or the Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 would be an excellent choice for that kind of gun. |

It's a commercial Mauser 98 action. They're Serbian guns built on German tooling from WWII, Fine rifles for the price. They're not high end sporters or custom hunting rigs. They're commercially made Mausers built on old war tooling. Good tough working man rifles.
I've been wanting one in 7.62x39mm for a while but I just don't that much hunting. If they bloody made one in 7x57mm I'd buy it in a heart beat. |
