I've ordered a Ruger Hawkeye Compact .308 rifle in stainless finish & laminated stock. I'm interested in getting a quality compact scope for it,preferably in a silver or stainless finish. These rifles are very short and compact so I don't want a scope that's longer than its 16.5" barrel. I was thinking of a 2x7 or 3x9 power or something in that range. My budget is probably around the $200-600 range. Any suggestions?

Depends on how compact you want to go.  The Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 is shorter than most 3-9 scopes.  If you really want to go compact, you might consider a Weaver Classic V-Series 1x3x20.  Only weighs 8.5 ounces.  I'm planning on getting one and a pair of Warne QD rings for my Mini-14.

What about a Nikon?  Good glass for the $$$ IMHO.  Don't discount a nice fixed 4x, either.

I love my Prostaffs. Great scopes for the money.

How would a Leupold VX-3 compare to the Nikons?

better than a nikon prostaff but too pricey IMHO. YMMV

i suggest a good bushnell or a trusty prostaff 3-9x40

I've got the Prostaff 3-9x40 on my deer rifle.  Good scope.

How would a compact pistol scope work on a rifle? Would the extra eye relief create a problem?
