I'm planning a "novel" to write for National Novel Writing Month starting in just a few days. It'll be centered around a couple of soldiers on a fictional world and there's going to be a lot of guns, of course. One of the characters is a marksman who will use a scoped M14/M21, but I was thinking he would have a short barreled automatic weapon as a backup.

So basically, my question is, HK53 or MP5? What are the drawbacks of firing 5.56mm in such a small weapon? In a warzone, is there any reason to use the MP5 over the HK53?

This is probably more a GD question, but I thought I would get a more technically-minded response here.

Since the character is a marksman using a "scoped" weapon for precision and distance shooting, it stands to reason that his secondary weapon would be for close quarters situations.  That said, how about an MP5k, its small and handsome.

HK 53.

Because if your novel is ever made into a movie a 53 would be fun to see on the big screen vs the run of the mill MP5.   Remember the counter sniper in Clear and Present Danger he carried a .308 bolt gun and a suppressed MP5.

Also suppressed HK UMP 45 would be kind of cool.

5.56x45mm over 9x19mm any day, even when both are fired out of 8-9" barrels.  Flatter shooting with longer effective range and superior performance against body armor.

HK53 doesn't choke like a short barrelled M16 either!
Far more effective than any 9mm.

Tricky weaponry and current Russian and US snipers will carry an M4 or an AK-74 in addition to their sniper weapon if they are in a remote field operation.

from having carried MP5's (A3's and PDW's) along with M4's in Afganistan and Iraq i will say, i prefer the M4 unless space/visibility is an absolute issue.

Saiga. Or that folda-gun Magpul made, now that thing is kick ass. Your shooter could keep the thing in his back pocket.

By the way, you ARE going to upload the script so we can read it too right?

As long as you're being creative, maybe you should consider some other options. The MP5 is a good weapon, but a little old hat. How about an FN P90, or one of Knight's new PDW's? Or if you want ammo compatibilty with your character's sniper rifle, how about one of these?

I've heard of US sniper teams packing an M231 as a Break contact weapon.

Otherwise I'd say HK53.

really  ––-  i have not heard of or seen any teams (deployed in theater or prepping to go) that carry the M231.  ––  i have seen and worked with numerous teams that have M4's, and one with an M4/203 combo but no M231's.

Knight's Armaments PDW

or a VSBR M16 if he is a US sniper and would like to maintain weapons continuity with his support elements.

(disclaimer; this an arfcom member's gun, I saved the pic because I still think it is one of the coolest SBRs that I have ever seen)

P90, with those evil armor piercing bullets (and maybe even the shoulder thing that goes up!).  Everyone needs a good .22 Mag
