I've planned this for some time; to cache a gun and ammo in an undisclosed place for SHTF situations. Today I decided the safe needed cleaned up so I did a little tidying

For Emergency use only

After ONLY 9 months I seem to be running out of space! What's a guy to do?

Try cleaning out that safe......

Looks like you should buy some GUNS to put in that enormous safe full of clutter.

This.  I've had twice as many guns in a safe 1/4 that big.

I know they say you should always buy a safe that is bigger than you think you need...but I think a good filing cabinet would have done the trick for Walt.

store your ammo in a knaak box

Gee guys! I'm hurt. Guns without ammo isn't so good and there's only a hand full of fileing in there. The rest is guns, ammo and precious metals!

why the F**k do you have a 9mm barrel with a G23, with 500 rounds of .40 ammo? Why bother putting a conversion barrel in with the "emergency" () gun if there isn't the same ammo in the friggin box with it?

Lots of fail.

The safe is for weapons NOT ammo.

The 'Emergency' thing...cute but fail on the 9/40 mess up.

Clean out the safe, buy MOAR weapons and post again.

I wasn't even acknowledging the Emergency kit, it was total fail.  Unless your emergency is a day at the range plinking and your gun breaks and you're out of ammo, then that was a good piece of kit.  Not enough lipstick for that pig.

Sorry for all the negative Walt.  But on the upside, looks like a pretty nice safe.

Man, you guys are harsh!

That said, I agree... get a less expensive safe for the ammo and stock up your current safe with more guns

[#12]
It's a fair start.  I'd round out the SHTF kit with some spare parts, some ammo for the caliber conversion, a holster, spare mag carrier, and a cleaning kit.

I keep stuff in my safe besides guns too.  A little organization and seperate storage for some of that ammo will help you out a lot.

Safe could definitely use some tidying up.

Remove the ammunition from your safe.  Similarly remove any magazines/accessories unless they are very expensive accessories.  I now only store firearms in my safe and some of the more expensive parts.

My guess is that 9mm is more common worldwide than .40S&W.

The .40 S&W barrel is already in the gun so it can readily take the ammo in the box.

Now if a SHTF scenario took place in which enemy personnel was using 9mm, after running out of .40S&W you could steal 9mm from the enemy and be good to go.

Can you people not see the 9mm conversion barrel in the shrinkwrap?

The .40 barrel is in the gun.

+1.  Why use things like gun rugs to take up space in a safe?

If you have to resort to defending yourself with a pistol, you wont need 500 rounds of ammo nor a conversion barrel. You'll be dead long before that point.

what, you have 4 rifles and a cluttered safe-i would give it a fail but at least its something

clean and clutter free looks like this

Disagree, a quality handgun will always be a positive in a SHTF situation. Ammo may be used for barter, practice, hunting, etc. When it comes to weapons, I dont think anyone ever wished they had less ammo, unless they were humping it

Sure its a p[ositive. My point is if your primary self defense weapon is a pistol you've already lost.

The best defense is the best you can afford.

If I could I'd have a mini-gun. Unfortunately I don't have $200K laying around. Come on Lotto.

Or why did you vacuum pack something that you need quickly. Seriously. There's nothing like "Oh shit, I need my gun" and then realizing that you don't have a knife or a way to open up your brilliant vacuum sealed gun or empty mags that you then need to load.

You need to read more here and post less.

Guys enhance your calm.

Read his post carefully.

Just because it is not your idea or safe take a chill pill.

1. cache something somewhere
2. he was cleaning up the safe
3. Extra ammo and conversion barrel always better to have then not have
4. Lots of ammo in his safe means lots of shooting (some people own guns, others shoot them, more ammo to actually use your guns wins out in my book every time)
5. Post pics of your organized, labeled, ammo forts if you have it so together (only 1 person did this, the rest just had a hissyfit).

Just my $.02

But WHY? What kind of unicorn flying fantasy does a guy have to have to think hes going to E&E armed patrols and looters to make his way to his cache of arms so to defend himself......

Look, its fun to fantasize. Shit I do it too. But I dont keep a spare towel in the bathroom on the off chance a super model is going to walk in and want to shower with me, and I dont bury guns out in the boonies in the event that I find myself stripped of everything I own and on the run. At that point I'll want a spare change of clothes and a quarter to call my cousin more then a pistol. I mean shit, at LEAST bury cheap Mosin or something. Much preferable to have a rifle over a pistol.
