Hey all,
I have the chance of obtaining a svt-40 in 7.62x54r caliber. Its going for a grand and wondering if its worht the price? looks likea a unique piece of history!? Thanks Frank |

Look at the online auctions for price. If it is an original non import marked gun and matching it will bring $1600 easy. Import electro pencil force matched guns bring about $800-900. The import guns are easy to pick out as they all have plumb colored bolts that should be in the white. |

SVT prices have gone way up over the years. My brother bought one two years ago in primo condition for $900. It was a deal then, with average condition rifles going for $7-800. His came with a bayonet, too. If it's in great shape, a grand isn't far out of line.
Word of caution: SVT's are LOUD! There's no mistaking one on the range. They're a hoot to shoot, though, and quite accurate. |

I would say it would be well worth the money to pick up. If its in good condition, things like that can only go up in price over the years. Also, 7.62x54R ammo is still relatively cheap. Be careful about using the surplus stuff though. Without a proper cleaning, they will really eat up your rifle.
Case in point, I acquired a Mosin 91/30 from a fella at a yard sale for 40$. The reason it was so cheap, is that the entire inside of the barrel was filled with red rust. This is a combination of shooting corrosive ammo, and, trying to clean it using water an ammonia and not oiling it afterwards. After cleaning out the rust, I found that nearly all the rifling was gone. Had to cut nearly 1 1/4" off the barrel to find rifling to use for a clean crown. It shoots like a smoothbore musket, as when the bullet hits paper, it tears a nice big square hole in it.

| Good rifles. Some of them are tack drivers others you would be lucky to keep a 6 inch group at 100yds. Although with the prices going up on these items like they are it would probably be worth the price. Makes me wish I would have purchased the two I passed up a few years back for $400.00. |
