I inherited a Savage 340 Bolt Action .30/30. Fired it for the first time yesterday, with two types of ammo. PMC and Federal 170 grain soft points.
Naturally, the PMC grouped about 1.25 at 50 yards and the Federal about 2.75. Here's the dilemma...On several (6 out of 13) shots, the Federal cases were difficult to extract. The PMC were fine. Difficult extraction always makes me concerned, but these are fairly mild factory loads. Is Federal 30.30 brass oversize? |

I would just clean the chamber and check the brass for marks. Use flashlight too to see inside for erosion of the chamber. You can also check the length of the cases, maybe one make is too long for the chamber. 30-30 has very deep crimp because the brass is pretty thin. This may elongate the case when fired and retard the extraction. |

Federal has a reputation for soft brass, this may, or may not, be part of the issue, or your rifle may not like federal ammo try some Rem or Win factory ammo, or reload, |
