so my brother is convinced that he wants to drop about $1500 on a ptr-91 (hk91 clone). I'm thinking he'd be better off getting an ar-10. give me some points to help convince him

I don't think there are any...

I think the PTR-91 is superior in every way to the AR-10 really, unless you want to get into a lego contest...

That being, who can add the most shit to their rifle

ETA:  There is of course, an exception to every rule, and in this case that exception is the SR-25.

So what have we learned?

SR-25>PTR-91>AR-10

If you can find a SR-25 for $1500 let us know! No wait... let me rephrase that... let me know.

If I can find TWO of them for $1500 each, THEN I'll let you know

The PTR's are great rifles.  My only complaint would be the heavy barrels.  But they are freaking accurate.

One of the best rifle deals out there all the way around.

The barrel is heavy because it's a match barrel and not a light weight one...... Having said that the PTR91/G3 is a workhorse. Rugged, reliable, accurate and heavy. I think the AR10 is much easier customizable, but for an additional $350 you get a claw mount and a Hensoldt scope.
Both do the job, PTR does it cheaper.... just my $.02

I understand that.  I've had two.

It just makes the rifle a little less balanced.  But it's not that bad having the extra weight.

The only plus to the AR10 over the PTR91 is that you can find and reload your brass with relative ease over the PTR. I would get both anyway.

I prefer the AR10 type, because the PTR does not balance well. I do not want a "match heavy barrel" on a 16" folding/collapsible stock weapon.

I still have 100 G3 mags though.

The AR-10 has the advantage of being able to get far better triggers because they will accept all of the match triggers availabe for AR's.  I know the G-3 type trigger can be improved, but not as easily or effectively as the AR-10 trigger.

I vote for the AR-10 as well. Buying a flattop allows one to have ALL kinds of versatility for optics & iron sights. A better trigger possibility has already been mentioned. Armalite also offers a LIFETIME warranty on their AR-10 series.

I probably shouldn't have to mention the variety of uppers one can switch on an AR-10, do I?

PTR cheap mags, accurate but front heavy, akward controls, scoping it sux, limeted rails unless you like heavy

AR10- expensive mags but can use M14 mags if needed, very accurate, scopes easily, available rails options, mult uppers, mult uppers, good ergo's, mult uppers

I've found the PTR91 to be a very good rifle myself. Not as good for a lefty which I am, so I sold mine, but still a very good rifle.
A trigger job is really all they need in operating system improvements and Bill Springfield does those well.
The barrel is heavier contour which adds more front weight, but it is a match barrel and not that big of a deal in weight. Just some people like to turn it into an issue when it really isn't. What it was designed for was to add precision and it does.
If you personally don't like the balance of the 18 inch regular length barrel than look at the 16 inch.
It's a bit more evenly balanced.

There a quality made clone of the G3 with improvements and the G3 design has seen alot of ground in various armies on this little pisshole world. It's a truer battlerifle and better fighting rifle to me than an AR10, but I've never thought the Ar/M16 was that great actually. More overrated than anything like the Glock.

B&T makes some nice mounts that DSA sells and handguard replacements too. Mags are still reasonable and well made too and Magpul has it's new adjustable cheekpiece/lop stock out there now.
It's up to you and what fits you best of course, but I say forget the AR10 and buy a PTR91 while you can if that's what you want.

This threads needs more pics.
