I'm looking for a good bolt action rifle without a heavy barrel. (I am planning on building a long range .308 later...)  I need something thats a multi-purpose durable rifle.  I tried to find a .308 remington 700 BDL but apparently they don't make them anymore and are kind of hard to find.  Also, the Browning A-bolt doesn't come in the .308 either.  Wood or synthetic doesn't matter but no stainless. I would like to spend less than $750.  Any thoughts...

Look into the Howa M1500; I had a heavy-barrel model that was damn accurate with cheap ammo for a factory gun.

Remmy 700 SPS, chunk the plastic stock and get a B&C for a total investment of $650. Mine is a real shooter and fairly lightweight. I really like the B&C stock too.

Browning doesn't make an A-bolt or now X-bolt in .308 any more?  I have a .308 A-bolt Mirco and love it.  The gun shoots great and the barrel is free floated.

Many good alternatives to the Rem 700. Winchester Model 70, Savage Model 10 (including 10 CFM Scout), Ruger Model 77 Mk II, Mauser M03, Mauser M98, Thompson Center Icon,.. Any of these guns are a good basic platform to start with, many excellent barrel makers around. The Icon comes with a good barrel to start with.

If you are looking to save $$ you could also try to score one of the countless SMLE turnbolts built to .308 and released to the surplus market.

Perhaps a surplus FR-8 would suit you as well.

Yes they do make the A-bolt and X-bolt in .308 but I think its going to be above $750 for a new one.  I have looked for a used one but haven't had any luck.

BTW, is the action and trigger assembly the same in the SPS, BDL, and ADL Rem. 700?  How does this differ from the PSS and LTR (other than the heavy barrel)?

For the money I think Savage Bolt guns are hard to beat. They also tend to be more accurate then theur higher priced breathern.

I would be one over the japenese made Howas.

I had a remington model 7 that was a great hunting carbine.  They are still cataloged on remmys site but the price is higher than what u were hoping.

They are not safe for .308 but just 7.62x51 due to pressure differences.  Not sure if the Ishy 2A is the same way though.

Check out the Tikka rifles, I'm very happy with the T3 Lite I purchased in .338 federal.  Nice and light, smooth bolt, and priced right.

I have a ruger hawkeye, savage 11 fcns, remington adl, and a winchster all in 308(ok I like to collect in specific calibers).

Of all these the hawkeye is the most accurate of the bunch followed by remington, savage and winchester. But the difference in groups is so small for my purposes that it does not matter.

Cost vs value I would say the ruger is best at 400 bucks(what I paid last year). For accessories it would be remington or savage.

Out of the bunch ruger(hawkeyes not the older 77's) and savage(accu trigger) have the best factory triggers.

I believe the same goes for the Ishapore Enfields.

I plan on eventually getting a Savage Scout. For the price and performance it's hard to beat.

Without a doubt, I would get a Tikka T3 lite.

Tikkas are phenomenally accurate. I am somewhat of a obsessive accuracy crank when it comes to rifles and can honestly say the Tikkas represent the best value on the market. I have built numerous Remingtons over the years that I have spent a bunch of money on custom barrels only to have them shoot "as good" if I am lucky as a stock Tikka.

I currently am down to one full house Remington in .260 that is set up for long range competition. I however have 6 Tikkas. I currently have 2 in .308, one is a T3 Varmint and one is a T3 Lite stainless. Both will shoot my handloads in the .5s CONSISTANTLY. That is not a "this one time I shot a .5" group. That is on an average across the board of 20 groups they average out in the .5s with handloads using hunting bullets rather than match bullets.

The T3 lite I cut to 20"s and put Talley lightweight rings and a 4.5x14 Leupold on. I cannot think of a better all around .308.

In short they are super hard to beat. 3 or 5 round detachable mags, great stocks and superb triggers.

Browning evolved the A-Bolt into the almighty X-Bolt.  It's one sexy rifle too.  It's my primary deer rifle...along with any other venue I'd so choose to sling a 308 Winchester.  I use 168-Grain Winchester Ballistic Silvertips exclusively.  My rifle sees no other bullet.  Weighs 7lbs with the scope.  It's also a 0.75MOA-1MOA rifle.  The 60-degree bolt is also an excellent feature as is the drop mag, recoil pad, and durathane finish.

Browning X-Bolt chambered in 308, topped with a Trijicon 3X9 Accupoint:
