Gentlemen,
I purchased a used Eagle Arms A2 rifle. First trip to the range resulted in numerous failure to feeds. Turned out the bullet tip strikes the barrel extension, one time shoving the bullet (62gr) halfway back into the case.
Builder friend says he thinks it may be faulty barrel extension.
Can anyone point me in a direction to validate this or maybe some other things to check?
I just don't know how a barrel could be put together with a faulty/improperly installed extension unless homebuilt by a novice.
Are barrels even sold w/o the extension already on?
Thanks for any help, Rafter

Yes, you can get a barrel w/o the extension but I doubt that's the origin of your problem... what was the source of your purchase?

Sounds like you may have a mag issue, did you use different mags with the same result?  Perhaps the mag follower or mag spring are bad.

I had a similar issue years ago that was solved by having the sharp corners of the extension smoothed out... barrel was Bushmaster and they did it for me free of charge.  In my case, the bullet tip was getting snagged in the area where the bolt locking lugs enter the extension.

Eagle Arms is/was a part of Armalite, it was their 'value brand' for AR stuff.  I would give ARamlite a call and tell them what is happening, even though the Eagle Arms stuff only had a 1 or 2 year warranty, there is a good chance they would look at it for you.

Barrel extensions aren't just something you screw on and screw off, once the gas port is drilled and the FSB pinned on you pretty much are stuck with what you have.

Before spending lots of money on a wild goose chase, see if Armalite will look at it.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the information. You are both correct of course.

Bowhntr6pt, those are the same symptoms I experienced.

Dawg180, I did (finally) call Armalite. They were extremely helpful and will work on it for me.

Turns out it's an old variant before Amrmalite aquired Eagle Arms. Armalite was still willing to repair it for me, though not as warranty work, which I wouldn't expect anyway.

Seems the older models had a different profile of components. The shape/contour being different where the bullet is fed into the chamber.

Anyway, Thanks for the information, Rafter
