I was at the local gun shop and apparently recently acquired one of these:

http://www.globalgear.com.au/images/aug1%20steyr%201%20copy.jpg

In fact, it looks identical to the one pictured. First thought was wow...looks like something some airsoft tool would be wielding around, all plasticy and shit.

Then, I see the price tag: $4500!!

WTF.

Does anybody own one of these. Does it cost a ridiculous amount of money because it is hard to find or what?

ETA: Oh and by the way...they had a series of magazines there for it for $65 a pop

It probably wasn't a Steyr, but a Microtech STG 556.

btw great place to post this ---

Thats not a Microtech.  And good thing you posted this in the AR15 Optics forum, aka the Aug forum.

Nope, that's a real Steyer AUG.  The MSAR STG 556 has three screws on the right side for mounting a 1913 rail to if not using the standard optic.  $4500 is about right for a real Steyer AUG because there aren't many around.  The MSARs are going for around $1800 right now if I remember right.

Yeas, i bet you the one in the picture is really a Steyr AUG... that being said, am i the only one that read the original post?

he said that the one he saw down at the shop looked identical to the one in the picture that he posted up here....

it might really be a steyr aug because of the price, or it could just be that the shop acquired a new MSAR STG 556 and decided to mark it up and add a pelican case, some nice optics, mags or what not.

I haven't seen an AUG in a shop for a long long long long time.

Yes it's a Steyr AUG A1 which the full auto rifles are used by Austria, Ireland, Australia, etc., armed forces.

The semi auto version of these were banned from importation during the 1989 import ban so there are not many around here and that's why the prices are so high.

I've got two of them a 20" barrel like the one in your pic and also a 16" carbine, bought them back in '89 for only about $1,200 each, see my pics in the official bullpup picture thread.

This thread should really be moved to the Armory section - Bullpup Rifles forum.

Steyr are going to be making the improved A3 models here in the US and it would be available again soon, keep your eye on the Bullpup Rifles forum for updates.

$4500! WAY overpriced. Find them for $3200 all day long. Can get mags for about $35 each as well. The guy wasn't a dealer, he was a dreamer!

I have 2 now, and had a couple others AWESOME rifles and heavier than they look for all the plastic that shows on the outside...

Real AUGs are rare in the US.

I don't know if $4500 is obscene, but I know you're not going to touch one for $3000 or less.

Ive actually seen a good many of the A1s for 2800-3000 in used condition. There is one on Gunbroker now at 2850. The later versions will bring more. 4500 is too high for a standard green A1. Also, original steyr Magazines usually bring 32-40 dollars each so he is high on those as well.

I own a 16 inch black police AUG and an original Steyr A2 Green AUG.

Depends on the Condition, Depends on the serial number as well. Cheapest I've seen recently was $3,500.

That is a real AUG though A1 made in Steyr, Austria by Steyr Mannlicher a firearms firm that has been making firearms since about 1864.

The AUG A1 is about as far from an airsoft rifle as you can get my friend. The AUG has seen action in the mountains of Afghanistan, the sandy cities of Iraq, and the jungles of East Timor (F88 AUSSTEYR made by ADI which purchased the license from Steyr).  It has been with the Austrians since 1977 and has gone with them for peace keeping operations in Kosovo, Lebanon, and most recently the Sudan. The Irish have also adopted it as their primary service rifle and most recently the Irish Sniper Team won an American hosted International Sniper Competition with the spotter using the AUG A1.  US ICE has used the AUG in raids and with drug enforcement.

With a true toolless quick change barrel, caliber modularity to a 9mm, using the highest grade of polymer (Austria is world renoun for their polymer), and a standard 1.5x optic that remains today one of the best damn factory sights I've ever seen (it will hold its zero unlike the G36's factory optic)  it was a rifle way ahead of its time.
