I live in Michigan, I can get any magazine for any gun I want. I know there are places in the US that have some pretty crappy laws regarding magazine capacity and what can be owned, bought and sold. Can anyone point me to some "cliff's notes" type reading on this topic? or just state what its like if your behind the lines. |
Bottom line: Read the laws. Follow them. For example, in my home regime of Maryland, there's a ban on buying, selling, receiving, building, or transferring mags of over 20 rounds in the state of MD, but there's no ban on possession. So we buy 'em in PA or VA and bring 'em back. |

I'm asking, wondering if anyone would have any interest in some of the 9mm magazine conversions I've made, and parts experimentation I've done. I'd be happy to share and do more experiments if others would benefit from it. I just don't know if theres any interest. You guys in New York can't have hi-caps for many of the newer guns then I take it, like the M&P, or XD? Can you convert preban mags to fit other pistols? Any laws regarding this? What about using factory parts from other mags? I know conversions aren't as desirable as factory, but can be better than nothing. |
-We cant have any "new" hi-caps for the newer guns that use proprietary magazines like the m&p or xd -Its about the magazine and not the weapon its going into. So long as the magazine was made prior to 9-13-94, it can go into anything you want. Case in point is my 9mm ar15. I run preban uzi mags that were converted to fit in a 9mm magazine well. -There are plenty of "preban" magazine available on the market for all kinds of pistols like the beretta 92, Ruger P95, Glock, etc. If you could use those magazine bodies to make hi-capacity magazines that fit in the XD or M&P, you might have a nice little niche market. |

California has weird laws also. Possession is not illegal, only importing, manufacturing, selling, trading, by private individuals. Our limit is 10 rounds for new manufactured magazines. With that said, here is what is allowed: Magazine replacements are allowed. You may repair any hi-cap magazine that you already owned. You can buy whatever magazine parts you want. You just can't end up with more magazines than when you started. Many people and companies sell magazine rebuild kits to CA. As long as a hi-cap magazine is disassembled it is not a magazine. But it has to be to repair your mags. Hi-caps modified to 10 rounds are legal. There are lots of people with the new pmag, that have been modified. Purchasing hicaps is not illegal in CA, just selling. There are actualyl some obscure exemptions for FFLs and Armored Car companies to import and sell their hi-cap magazines. LEOs and many correctional officers are allowed to buy hicaps. If you want to sell a mag to a CA resident, just disassemble it first. A lot of people have magazines that are wearing out here in the state. There were lots of hicap magazines here when the ban went into effect. |
Quoted for importance. We can have any magazine over 10rds shipped to us provided it is disasembled. A disasembled magazine is magazine parts, not a magazine. What the buyer here in CA does with it is on him, not you. That being said most people turn them into 10rders or keep them disasembled for when we take a drive to Nevada or go out of state. |
