Not an Air Softer but Tokyo Mauri and Classic Arms are pretty good.  I belive Classic Arms has aluminum upper and lower and can get a hop up.

If he wants an AEG (Automatic Electric Gun) Tokyo Mauri is a good starter gun.  Classic Army mades some decent AEGS and they have a lot more metal, usually fully metal bodies as opposed to the plastic of Mauri.  If he is looking for an M16/M4 series weapon i would highly recommend G&P even though they are a bit more pricey.

He also has the option of Gas powered guns.  The majoity of these are either GBB (gas Blowback) pistols or SMGs.  The KSC G18c is a select-fire glock that can be outfitted with a ton of options such as extended magazine, metal slide, threaded barrel, and suppressor.

If he's just starting out i would advise him to stick with AEGs, but as his experience and interest grows gas guns provide a more realistic and fufilling experience, for me anyway

Buy Tokyo Marui/Classic Army/ICS

Tokyo Marui basically invented the AEG, Automatic Electric (airsoft) gun, and Classic Army/ICS/G&G etc. etc. all reverse engineered Tokyo Marui's designs, and started their own innovations.  Different brands will have different features (more realistic take downs?  exclusive firearms?) but in general Tokyo Marui is the "safe" bet.  If he wants to modify the guns for more FPS, he can look into different brands and upgrade kits.

as a hobby, airsoft is like a mix between paintball and RC cars.

Just don't let him become a poser.

Most airsofters I've known genuinely act like they have real guns and are real "operators"...

Of course, they didn't know shit about either. They just wanted cool pictures of themselves in BDU's with airsoft toys for their e-penis growth.

Man you just described 70% of ARFCOM, just sub in your favorite semi for airsoft.  Just owning an AR/AK/HK does not make you;  1) Knowledgable, 2)Proficient or 3)Tough.

Quoted for truth. Sometimes I even think the airsofters are more self-aware than the arfcommers, especially when I see fake silencer cans on 16" barrels.

Oh and for the topic: what budget are you on? I would recommend Tokyo Marui if metal bodies (receivers) aren't very important to you. TM is known to be fool-proof. Classic Army is a little cooler with higher fps and metal bodies. I would pick CA.

Quote me for truth and ill get ya right back.

I have owned 2 Marui guns, an MP5A4 and an AUG, both were 90% plastic, but 110% fun and reliable.  This was in the mid to late 1990s, sold em to finance my Blackjack fund for my honeymoon in Vegas.  I have since held and shot a couple CA guns, an MP5 and a M4, both were over 50% metal and felt alot heftier than the TMs, both also ran 100% for the time I had access to them.
