Is there a set rule for the spacing of scope rings? It would seem to me that they would grip the scope most effectively with the widest spacing possible. Am I wrong? |
Right. That's exactly what I was thinking. What about torque specs? How critical is it to get them exact? (am I the millionth to ask this question?) Do I need to buy a in/lb torque wrench? |
A torquing tool keeps things consistent but certainly not necessary. I use one to set my all of rings and bases at the shop. Lapping the rings can help get full contact and avoid putting ring marks on a scope if you ever decide to remove it. a small touque wrench will work or you can buy a preset unit like the kind used on action screws on bolt action rifles http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=12458&title=1/4 or an adjustable unit like this http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=18221&title=1%20TO%2075%20INCH%20POUND%20VARIABLE%20TORQUE%20WRENCH I like adjustable bases (Leupold/Redfield) or rings (Millet) because they allow you to collimate the scope to perfect centerline (same amount of adjustment for left and right) The farther apart your rings the more stable the setup will be, but you loose scope eye releif adjustment by doing that too. You have to setup the correct eye releif first then maximize the distance of the ring seperation. You should also mount the scope as low as possible. Chad |
