Just picked this thing up in a trade. Marked made in Korea MaxII  5.56mm on one side and imported by Stoeger ind. on the other. Seems to have been fired very little, 99% condition. Inspecting the barrel, it is chrome lined and rifling would appear in the 1x7 range. Rifle below is not mine, but looks just like it minus the sling. What's the deal with this? Keeper? Shooter? Trade material?

A keeper and a shooter I got one back in the late 80's for 3 bones and change! Mine "the Dae Woo" is still going strong!

Those guns are HIGHLY under-rated.  Good find!

It is an interesting design. Seems to be part AR (upper and lower reciever are aluminum, takes AR mags, FCG very similar to AR), part AK (gas piston and bolt carrier) and part FAL (adjustable gas system, side folding stock, sling swivel set in a groove in the barrel). Trigger pull sucks compared to a standard AR trigger. May have to pull out the FCG to see just how close to AR it really is, maybe drop in a two stage Rock River set from one of my ARs to see if it works.

The last three, close ups, are of the only marks on the rifle. The rest is like new.

Edit, fixing pics, please stand by....ok, wont let me, lets see if I can put them in seperate posts.

A great design.  Daewoo built M16s for the ROKs under a contract from Colt and used the experience to design the K1 and K2 rifles.

Most of them were imported post-'89 so you'll find more info if search for information on the DR200, which is the thumbhole stocked version that was imported after that.

Ok, two small dots and a little finish on the folding stock hinge, Pretty good shape.

Poor man's FNC.  A friend of mine was infantry for 11 years and spent much time on the DMZ in Korea.  He says the officers and the senior/popular enlisteds carried the Daewoo K1A1/K2 series, which is what your gun is the civilian version of, and the lower ranking enlisteds or unpopular troops were forced to carry M16A2s.  He's a HUGE fan and owns multiple examples of the type.

I have to admit, having shot his and helped him clean them a few times, the design impresses me with its robustness and overengineered parts.  Its not the latest-greatest tacticool gun, but it'll shoot straight and work reliably.

Yeah, that's the one complaint that most people have.  On the other hand, the rifles are very durable so you're not likely to need spare parts.

Very nice. Definitely a keeper unless you sell it to me.

Wish I could have got the original box with it, but did not happen, just the rifle, no box, no accessories, no manual, not even the sling, just one I already had.

Wonder if they would make a 16 inch carbine "contractor" type upper out of my DR-200.  I live in a state with no SBR, but I would love one of these turned into a carbine!

Hey,

Score!

I have a DR-200 I've re-evilfied.

Check out Stormwerkz for the scope mount:

stormwerkz.com/Description_Pages/Daewoo_Scope_Mount_Views.html

If you pick up a spare firing pin, you should be GTG.  Rifle is very robust.

Have fun!

Azex does a lot of work on Daewoos.  Give them a hollar and see what they suggest.

There's also a DR200 mailing list at yahoogroups and Azex is a member.

I was in a warehouse filled to the roof with Max1's and II's and they were going out the door for $249

always meant to pick up  a couple of em..and never seemed to get around to it...

Until one day it was too late...

You got the good one too btw....congratulations...

I was always hoping that the Koreans would build a factory over here and start cranking out...we could
have made some nice improvements to that little gun and had one hell of a firearm

I read that the Daewoo doesn't like the PMAGs?  The bolt hold open doesn't work?

I only have one PMag, bought it just to try out. Seems to work fine in my ARs. I have test fit it into the Daewoo. Seems to have alot of play in the mag well, but it did lock the bolt back when I yanked the charging handle. Could be a fluke, or may not do so when actualy firing. I WILL find out

Ed,

Have fun with the Woo.  I fired mine for the first time at an Action Rifle event.

All the guys with AR's were like, "What is that thing?!"

After firing and flinging brass 15-20 feet away one guy said, "It certainly has positive ejection."

Heh.

Anyways, I had no malfunctions while some of the AR's were choking.

Kevin "Enjoy!"

Thank you RarestRX, I'm sure I will. I just yanked the Rock River two stage FCG out of a project I was working on and put it in the Daewoo. Once I got it back together, It would'nt let the hammer drop When I was first playing with it when I got it, I noticed that when the safety was on, there was absolutely no movement in the trigger and when the bolt was locked back, the selector could not be rotated, whether it was on safe or fire when the bolt was locked back made no difference. I figured the notch in the selector was a little shallow, so I took it back apart and used a fine flat file to deepen and smooth out the notch in it.

I now have a Daewoo with a VERY good trigger pull and no over travel

Edit; Now all I need is the selector discussed in this thread, and I will be very happy

I believe the Daewoo has a 1 x 12 twist rate, at least my DR-200 posty has.  Here are some de-banned pics of mine with re-threaded barrel, optics rail and Ace sidefolder.

ETA: FAL handguards will also fit the DR & Max series.

Cheers

Since I got it, I've been trying to find out as much as I could about them. First looking at the barrel I was pretty sure it is 1x7. Had several people say they are 1x12. From what I have found, it depends on when they were made. Early ones and some importers were all 1x12, while later ones were 1x7. According to the link below, my rifle is 1x7 My rifle is marked the same as, and in the same serial number range(323xxx) as the rifles described in the 2nd and 13th post.

I have seen Daewoos with Penguin HG's, DSA G1 metal HG's and also the Century Arms cheapo HG's.  Recently I saw a Daewoo with wooden HG's and I am guesing they were L1a1....possibly modified?

I bought a K2 in 1987, for $230.00.  The barrel was 1x7, to be compatible for the then; new NATO 62 grain 5.56 military round.  Who knew that the round would go up past 70+ grains?

I installed a Tasco pro point on the K2, with the stock mounting system (which was awesome for the times and well thought out).  The rifle was accurate in slow and rapid fire, stock folded or not.

The rifle was solid as a tank and never failed with any mag (cheap or top shelf) or round (surplus or commercial).

Proof is in the pudding.  Look at the 20 year old rifle on this post.

i have a few extra Phantom FH's and i want to put one on my DR, so is the piece thats on the gun now just soldered on there?? heat it and twist it off or what?? ill ask altho im sure  its not but there is no threads under the muzzle 'cap'??   If i can get that off there pretty easy, ill have it threaded and install the FH..and i got my new StormWerks mount in the mail this morning and wow, thats a really nice piece. Still looking for a place to sell the handguards mentioned in the above post to put on these..thanks

I look at Daewoo K-2s every day in the hands of the numbnut ROKAF AP guards here at Osan AB, ROK.  Those weapons are trashed.  They have hardly any finnish on them, the wire stocks are dented to shit, theres no ammo in them because they don't trust draftees with ammo.

I've handled a few K2s and they seem like nice rifles.  The ones carried by the real ROK Army and ROK Marines looked well cared for.  The soldiers I spoke to said they really liked their weapons but like the our M-4's because of all the cool stuff on them like the M-68's and VITAL-2's and 203's.

I handled a silenced 9mm Daewoo carbine.  That weapon was pretty cool.  It looked like it fed from Uzi style mags.

If I were to ever run across a Daewoo, I'd give it some thought about buying it.

There's regular AR/M16 threads under the muzzle device.  It's usually high-temp soldered on, so you have to get it very hot.  Propane torch won't get it hot enough.

The threads are also longer than the AR-15.

I sent my Daewoo to a gunsmith in Charlotte who posts on the FALfiles under the screenname "Moses".  He heated the muzzle device until the solder liquified then removed the break.  Afterward he cut, crowned and rethreaded the barrel just below the existing threads.  I asked him to keep the existing barrel length as long as possible and I believe it is around 18".  Moses was so impressed by my Woo that he asked me to sell it and after I declined he bought one himself    My dad saw mine and bought one too.

I may have to pic up one of those Stormwerkz optics rails...anybody got a link to purchase?

I'm using the Stormwerkz receiver block and an ACE non-folding stock.  I'm pretty sure they should work:

I liked the Stormwerkz better because it was more rounded and fit flush with the pistol grip.

If you already have an ACE folding mech you can just bolt it onto the StormWerkz Stock Adapters, they have the same bolt pattern.
