Which are generally considered the best, before I buy?  Don't mind spending for them if they're worth it.

Thanks!

I have tried several different kinds over the years, and I always find myself going back to Peltor Tactical-7s.  They are heavier and bigger than some of the others, but they have a higher NRR and better amplification.  The lighter electronic muffs that I have tried don't muffle the sound as well.

As an added benefit (and liability), the Tac-7s have such a good seal that they keep your ears toasty warm in the winter and make your head sweat like hell in the summer!

Peltor SWATTAC are the best I've used . Sordins get good reviews as well .

The Sordins are pretty damn good, but also pretty damn expensive.  Very low profile and very comfortable and they are made in smaller number than the Peltors so they have a better reputation for QC.  I've seen some of the Peltor's fail, but they are backed by a pretty good warranty.

I work as an RO at an outdoor gun range and I have owned a set of Radians (forget the model), Peltor Tac-6, and currently use Sordin Supreme-Pro Xes.  The Peltors sucked.  They collected moisture in the ear cup and would short out because of unprotected electronics.  A coworker has the exact same problem with his too.  They also don't protect very well.  My ears would be ringing at the end of the day.  They were also VERY quiet and had to be on full blast to match the mid level setting of the Sordins or the just barely on setting of the Radians.

The Radians work.  They have bad clipping (you can hear the speakers turn back on after every shot) and they are bulky, but they protect the best of the three.  They also kind of eat batteries (6 AAAs IIRC).

The Sordins are my favorite.  They are expensive as hell, but I wear them 8 hours at a time, so I felt it was justified.  I also got the optional gel ear seals and those little fabric covers Brownells sells.  They are SUPER comortable, low profile.  They have no clipping (it just quiets the gunshot down to regular levels instead of cutting everything out) and I can even hear the bullets hit the 50 yard backstop.  They are in the middle as far as protection goes, but good enough for where I am at.  The volume ranges from quiet to amplified (5 settings with the middle being about normal).  There is an audio input that I use for listening to local football games on the radio.  It does not cut out ambient sound, just adds it on top, like listening to an external speaker, just you are the only one who can hear it, so I am still aware of what is going on.  AWESOME battery life and runs only two AAs.  The best part is the fact that they are nearly waterproof, so I don't have to worry about condensation screwing things up like with the Peltors.

This is my rankings.  Take it for what it is worth.
1. Sordin Superme Pro-X
2. Radians
3. Peltor Tac-6 (I really wish I hadn't bought them.  They are that bad).

After years of using non-electric muffs, I recently got a pair of Peltor 7S and I think they work very well.   The off / on switching is very smooth.   I was worried about the lower NNR but they work just fine, even against a S&W 500.

I just got some Howard Leight's and have been pleased with them so far.  They are slim profile and light.  I also like that the volume control is only on one side but controls both.  They were 59.99 from Midway.

I'll probably get laughed at for this, but I recently was in Harbor Freight and saw that they had some electronic muffs that usually cost $19.95, and they were on sale for $9.95.

I bought them and have used them a lot recently.

They work great!

I have Radians at about $1oo. Work well for AR outside under canopy. Use them sometimes to watch TV to help poor hearing without excessive volume on TV.

Used to be my Peltor Tac 6 were considered a very nice set. They have since fallen by the wayside as technology has produced better sets for less.
Still, they aren't bad at all.

Anyone know where to buy the Sordin Supreme Pro-X?  This place:

http://www.csuk.us

May be over priced and has a steep return policy.

Thanks.

I have a pair of SwatTacs. They work great, waterproof and good fit and comfort> However if your shooting indoors alot in confined areas, with an SBR you will want to double plug up with these as they only offer 19NRR or 20NRR depending upon which Comtac/Swattac model you get.

The cheaper electronic ones are unregulated and dont pass any safety specs..you get what you pay for... go deaf...blame Chineese substandard safety gear...

there are lots of good cheap "shooting supplies" at HF.  thanks for the review of the e-muffs.  I was looking at them, too.

+1 i posted a thread about electronic muffs, pretty much had my heart set on some peltor 6s but after some guys talked about the impact sports muffs and read all those glowing reviews on snipershide, i got them and they are fantastic. here

I've been using a set of Peltors for over 10 years. I've seen other brands owned by friends repeatedly fail. YMMV.
