I saw in the cabelas flyer a savage Model 93R17BTVS bolt action .17 cal with a scope for 389$. Save 60$. They also have 50 rounds of .17 for 10$. I can afford an ar15, but not the all the ammo I want to waste, so I want something with inexpensive ammo. Youtube vids show how much more powerful it is compaired to .22 lr. My question is; is this a good gun for price? It seems kind of expensive. I also saw some marlins for 250$ but what do .17 hmr owners sugest. I also liek the look of teh savage with scope.

For a bolt action you can;t go wrong with either the marlin or the savage.  A year ago or so I got bitten by the .17 HMR bug and picked me up an NEF breakopen for $150.  Yeah, it is a break open and it wasn't expensive.

I've shot both the Savage and the Marlin 17 HMRs and they are nice.  The accutrigger is a plus.  If you really want the savage, shop around and see if you can get a better proce.  I've been to that Cabelas in East Hartford, the one you might be speaking of and they seem to have higher prices then most around.  I've seen cheaper prices at dick's sporting goods in milford, CT.  But, shop around see what you can find.

thanks, im really not a fan of cabelas, but i went on line and the price for a new savage in that model is $414.00 according to savage website. Add a scope and thats 50$ more, so I figured 389$ was a good price. Also the price is good till 24th.

I just took a look at Savage's website and it gives some pretty high prices...

Most of the scopes on the package deals are pretty low ball and just not so good.

I mostly  just don't get the 17HRM . If you are hunting little fuzzy things and you want to push out the range to where a 22lr is dropping so fast it is tough to get hits it is a short go between before you break out the 22-250. If you just want something to shoot stick with the 22lr

Eh, it is something different and I like it personally.  You could say the same thing about all the other wildcat or proprietary catridges out there and that there is 'always something better' but in the end, its the ARFCOM way, get them both, buy them all.

I have a savage 93 hmr and love it.  I have killed many gophers, squirrels and rabbits with it.  It is a good varmint caliber and target caliber but I think it’s kind of expensive for plinking.  The 22lr is better for plinking and a lot cheaper.  Even with the expensive ammo like stingers it’s half the price of hmr ammo.

But if you want one, get one.....I did.

Those little 17gr bullets tend to really want to come apart on impact, something a 22lr doesn't do.  I purchased the CZ model of the 17hmr and always have a blast shooting it.

I went with a .17hm2 savage, the ammo is much cheaper and the difference in velocity isn't that big.

Wolf .223 is 50rds for $10/ 1000rds for $200, same as the cheap .17hmr, so I dont uderstand people saying it is cheaper to shoot.

I do however own a savage 17hmr, and it is a pretty fun round for pest control/target shooting.

I bought a Marlin at Walmart for $159 added a $50 scope and love it. Sure it's not the cheapest thing to shoot but I like it.

.17 aren't bad.  If your just gonna shoot get a .22LR.  If your doing most shooting at 300+ yards and don't want an AR get the .17 but if it's less than 300 yards you can save more money with a .22.

I was'nt impressed with the 17's ability to put  a big groundhog down past 125 yards, to many crawled off. I still have a Ruger 77/17 and had the HB blue wood stocked Savage. The Savage was accurate enough. There perfect for blackbirds and starlings, probably prairie dogs, crows too.

I'd get a 223 and a cheap reloading set up. Even with a single stage press you can knock out 100 rnds. of 223 ammo fairly fast and cheap. If you want blasting ammo buy Wolf at $10.00/50
