Being on limited funds, I have been looking at getting a 10/22 with a folder as an inexpensive practice tool for my new AR and FAL.

I am torn between putting the money into the 10/22 ($400) or just getting more ammo and mags to practice with my real go-to riffles (the FAL and AR).

It seems like I should put lots of rounds through my FAL and AR to learn how reliable they are and if I am shooting the 10/22 I may become a better marksperson but I still need to put roungs through my FAL/AR to determine their reliability and be comfortable with them.

What are all of your thoughts?

I know someday I will have to have a 10/22 but on a limited budget -  maybe I should wait. Plus with the AWB coming up, I might want to stock up on mags and ammo.

Thanks,

Falafull

Get a GSG-5.

www.germansportguns.de/gsg5/index.pl?mode=2

They will be here mid January and some dealers are taking pre-orders. I already pre-ordered mine.  I was going to get a 10/22 until I found these.
They are going for $475-$500

You can spend alot less for a 10/22.  You can get a used one for $100-150 or a new one for $200,  I've seen folders listed for $70.  Tactical Innovations had a folder and 2 magazine deal a while back.

How about a ciener conversion for the AR?  I have one that works good.

there is no way to beat the cost/shooting volume you get out of a .22.

WTF is the sense in a nonsense toy like that? If you are into looking tacticool or tactigay that will be a fine purchase i suppose. Hell, why not get a damn airsoft clone if you just wanna look like a putz. For that amount of money, you could have a GOOD 22 like the magnum research 22 that will shoot circles around that 3rd rate pos. Or maybe I'm just past the tacticool look and prefer a toy to have a purpose, or to actually shoot. Spraying and praying a target won't teach you jack shit about marksmanship.

I say get yourself a GOOD .22 or build yourself one, or buy a .22 conversion for your AR. Be aware though that if you have a 1/7 twist barrel for your AR it won't shoot .22lr worth a damn, so you might as well get a whole dedicated .22lr upper.

Whatever...........  I did't say it wasn't a toy.  That is just what it is.  I fun toy to plink around with.  A .22 is still a .22 no matter what pistol or rifle it is fired out of.

Hell he wanted a folding stock for a 10/22 so how does that rank on your precision scale.

looks like the mp5 clone has a nice folder too........   So it won't do either of which the 10/22 can do, fold, or shoot worth a shit.  You'll be stuck with half ass knock off that might as well zip tie an optic to, and be paying 60$ for prop. mags.

Hell, if tacticool is important, grap up a walther g22, at least it shoots good......

The 10/22 is fun in itself and they are cheep to shoot but they are not much similar to an AR and in my opinion not much of a training tool. As others have said they can be had cheaper than the mentioned $400 but by the time you buy triggers and other stuff to set it up the way you want you will be close or over that amount.
With the Ceiner you will be shooting your AR in all respects but recoil and noise.
Same trigger,mag release,sights and /or optics,and weight.
For $200 you will have the unit and some mags,if you get a discount at midway or Brownells you will save enough to also grab 500 rounds of ammo  and still be under $200!

Good advice.

The only reason I am getting the folding stock on the 10/22 is that it would simulate my FAL & AR better than the stock 10/22 version.

I am not into TACTICOOL.

I like the idea of having a 22lr conversion on my AR but if I can have a new rifle (10/22) then it might be better than switching calibers back and forth on the AR. Also, I would also use lower grade bullets in the .22..

I am worrier and would worry about putting wear on the lower receiver every time I replace the upper (if I go the full .22 upper route)  and would not want to wear out my AR Barrel.

Yes, $400 was to include all of the mags and upgrades I would need to get the 10/22 to be a closer fit to my AR/FAL setup.

Barrels wear out at the throat first. there is no way your going to wear out a .223 barrel running .22's in it. Your not going to wear out a lower swapping uppers either. The M-16's we used in basic had been disassembled 1000's of times. they were loose, but still worked fine.
Your fears are unfounded.

What's all the hate about? I might have to get a GSG-5 looks like a fun toy to me.
Aren't all these weapons just big boy toys anyway? Last time I check this is AR15.com and I'm sure most things on these forums are tactical type weapon system. At $500 I think the GSG-5 is a deal. I'm sure it won't be shoot as nice as my $500+ Ruger 10/22 and yes my Walther P22 is fun to shoot as well but still it looks like a fun toy, no sorry  I mean gun.

Get the 10/22, and maybe a set of 10/22 Tech-Sights from www.tech-sights.com/

I kept an eye on the local sporting good stores, until I found a brand new 10/22 for $179 plus tax.  From there, you can go anywhere--there are so many aftermarket options and accessories for the 10/22.  IMO, the basic 10/22 with Tech-Sights is a decent low-cost training tool.

I don't think anyone can say whether or not these will be any good because NO ONE owns one yet.  You can't say it will shoot like shit if you haven't seen it shoot first hand.  I agree that it isn't a good pick for a practice trainer for your SHTF guns (a .22lr dedicated upper for your AR would be a much better choice) but it has its own appeal.  I put one on order, but if it doesn't work I'll just sell it...
