So I'm in the market for a bipod and have a couple questions. It is for my savage 93r 17hmr beater gun that shoots quite well.

I have a couple of questions regarding bipods.
-What is does the swivel do?
-What are notched legs?
-Is 6-9 a good range for shooting prone and off the bench?
-Are Harris bipods pretty much the ones to get or can I consider some cheaper ones ie shooters ridge rock mount?

Thanks,
Alex

The swivel feature, unless I'm mistaken, refers to the bipod's ability to allow left and right movement in the roll axis without having to adjust individual bipod leg length.  This is perhaps the most important feature, IMHO.  Wouldn't spend $$ on a bipod without it.  Disregard this if you will never use the bipod out in the field (lots of uneven surfaces).

Six inches is about right for shooting off a bench; nine inches is about right for prone.

Notched legs allow even incremental adjustment, as opposed to the standard style which adjusts to wherever you set it.  Think digital, rather than analog

I've looked at a few bipods recently, and I don't think I'd be particularly happy with anything less than Harris swivel-series bipod.  Either the Brand X model looks cheesy, is built cheezy, or are poorly designed.  Frequently all three..

Since a Harris bipod with swivel feature is rather pricey for "beater" use, you might be happy with one of the $30 Pro-Mag bipods.

YMMV.
