I was given this rifle as a gift a couple of years ago. The person who gave it to me did not know which firearm manufacturer made it or really anything about it at all, other than the obvious. As you can tell, it is a 30.06 bolt-action, holds 5 rounds.

It is VERY accurate. I managed to take a squirrels head off with it from 80 yards away.

I blurred out the serial #, but it starts with 88XXX.

If anybody has any idea what I have here, please enlighten me. I would really appreciate it.

It's a sporterized 1917, made by Winchester.

The oval hole on the top of the receiver at the back, visible in the pic of the bolt is unique to Winchesters.  When you grind off the rear sight base, the Winchesters have that hole there.  The Remingtons don't.

Remington made the rifle after the war in civillian guise as the Model 30 and 30S.  There is no hole in the top of the model 30, nor in a sporterized Rem 1917.

The dead giveaway is that hole on the top of the action.

Definately a Winchester made M1917 sporterized.

Thanks for the help guys. I really like the rifle, and people would ask me what it is and I feel and look like a complete idiot when I tell them I don't have a clue

This way you found out what it is and gave a couple of people here the incentive to rub a couple of brain cells together. Good work.

Yeah, you guys have more brain cells than I do obviously, because I couldn't figure it out for the life of me.

Does this rifle hold any kind of value at all on the market? I don't want to sell it or anything, but I was just wondering out of curiosity. It is currently at my dads house, so if this thing has some value to it, I am going to go get it and take extra precaution with storing it.

Thanks again for the help!

It's just worth it's value as a shooter.   Looks like a pretty nice job.

Those actions are very strong, and when they were still commonly available custom smiths would use the action to build up completely new sporter rifles from scratch in powerful calibers.

It was born like this:

It appears from the pictures the work on the rifle is good and it is a Winchester. It would be somewhat difficult as well as somewhat expensive to equal the quality with todays offerings. It is a very good rifle, the receiver has the size and strength to handle the 460 Weatherby and is quite desireable in this area.

it should hold 6 rounds of 30-06 not the 5 you mentioned.
