The local Joes has Howa rifles with a Hogue stock and a Nikkostirling 3-10x42 scope for $399. They have them in .243, .270, 30-06, 7mm, and .300, is this a good deal? Are these rifles any good?

Thanks!

I always hate the rifle-scope combo package.  Howa, Remington and Savage all do it.  If the rifle can't sell on its own merit, how does throwing in a cheap-ass scope sweeten the deal?

Howa makes the Weatherby Vanguard.  Is it the same model as that?

Pretty much every rifle is real accurate right out of the box these days.  I'd check out the other "issues" that are important to you.  Fit and finish?  Trigger?  Warranty?  Feel?

I'm sure it will shoot well enough for hunting.  I'm also sure you're not going to have all the guys at the 300 yd. line creaming in their jeans over your gun.

I've paid more than that for guns that sucked.  I've also paid less for guns that rocked.

Yeah, I figured that they also have a Remington SPS for $400.

The Howa's are fine rifles. Forged recievers forged one piece bolts. Do a google search.

Theres a pretty good link to a video over at the ACCURATE RELOADING site under medium bore discussion forum. (Stucked bullet test) probably a few pages back now.

Over in Sweeden they did an experiment, they lodged bullets 10 inches in the bores of different 30-06 rifles then fired another round. Some interesting results for sure, the Howa did very well indeed, not so with a few other manufacturers rifles.

maybe someone can hot link the videos?

Nice link, although Im not sure how it relates to "quality" of a rifle. Looked that the majority, the howa included suffered damage, which is to be expected.

I am interested in the howa varmint barrelled actions that can be had for cheap. IIRC septic liked the howa for a baragin basement rig.

Can't vouch for the scope.

I have a Howaby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby.  It's a fine, accurate rifle.
One of my favorites.

I'd buy another Howaby before a Remchester.

kinda depends on what you expect out of a rifle as far as the features. forged or bar stock reciever, type of extractor, type of ejector, bottom metal or blind box, one piece forged bolt or brazed bolt handle, other, integral recoil lug or stamped, ect, ect,.

Myself I just varmint hunt anymore along with dotting paper, and really certain features make no difference to me. A failure to feed, extract or eject won't ruin my day.

Others who do a good deal of hunting, mostly big game poo poo certain rifles/features, especially if the critters are capable of stomping and chomping the hunter

I tend to agree with the old timers for a serious type rifle.

I had 2 Smith and Wesson 1500's. One in .308 and one in .223. They are Howa rifles. They were great shooters. I sold them as a set to a guy that really had to have them as a set.

They were well built rifles.

I've shot a Howa made Vanguard.

It was an okay rifle.

Howa rifles are made in Japan and the ownership of rifles in Japan ceased in 1971 or so.

Howa receivers have been the platform for many a precision rifle. I cannot speak for their barrels as I haven't heard anything about them, but their receivers are second to none.

I would never buy a Howa to keep stock. It would always be a platform for a custom rifle.

the only thing i don't like is the trigger angle of the Howa's.  i have large hands and have no problem reaching any trigger.  i like my trigger's angle so as to be pulled straight back.  the Howa's is angled so as the pull is directed slightly up towards the stock wrist/ rear tang.  people with average sized hands or small hands would probably love the trigger angle.

I've sold several of those combos, and people have been pleased with the accuracy and performance of the rifle but the scope leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Approach it as buying the gun, not the combo.
