I accidentally drilled a hole into chamber when I was putting on a scope rail. I know, I'm a jackass! My question is this. Is there anything I can do to fix this or is this gun ruined? Thanks ahead of time for your help.

I'm assuming this is a Mosin M44

If I had drilled a hole in the chamber proper, I would consider the gun unshootable.

Since M44's run about $75 or so.  Consider this a lesson in home gunsmithing.

Keep the rest of the parts.

Buy another M44.

BTW why are you drilling for scope mounts on an M44?

I'm guessing he wanted a scope on it...

I'm guessing the same thing.  Just curious about how he was going about it.  A Mosin isn't an easy gun to sporterize.

UNSHOOTABLE!!! no way I would risk it! its a only an M44 so consider it a cheap lesson in Gunsmithing and move on. good luck!

Consider it a cheap lesson.

Buy a new M44, and use your rifle as a parts gun for it.

Now you have a spare complete trigger group, bolt, stock, etc.

Just for general information:

It is quite easy to install a scout-type scope on a Mosin by using a S&K Insta-Mount.  They cost about $75 , and their quality control is very spotty, but they can be made to work pretty good.

Worked at a gunshop one time where the (just out of trade school) gunsmith had a habit of doing this.  He installed more than a few 'fuse holes' in people's black powder rifles.

They finally canned him after getting tired of buying new rifles for folks.

It's trash. You can keep it for parts though. And don't go drilling holes in the next one.

Sounds like an opportunity to pull that barrel, and install one in 7.62X39. Have allways wanted to try to convert an M44 to that caliber, would need a new bolt as well so its probably not worthwhile to sink that kind of coil into a 80 dollar rifle.

Sorry,  it's toast.

Ummm, no...

Chamber has a hole in it... changing barrels doesn't change that fact.  Plus it would be difficult at best to make an action designed for a rimmed 54mm cartridge accept a 7.62x39...

ya... just no.

Is it just me, but EVERY barrel I have EVER seen has the chamber built into one end of the barrel ? ? ?

He said he drilled into the chamber, not the receiver...

Yea, the last I checked the chamber was part of the barrel. I know it would be a difficult conversion, but I think if a source for a barrel at a cheap enough price it would be possible.
