A buddy of mine from upstate NY wants a semi-auto rifle and he stressed that he wanted something different (not an ar and not a normal ak).  His price range is around $1000 so dont go higher than $1500. He doesnt know a whole lot about the assault rifle scene so he asked for my guidance.   I recommended the XCR or a FAL with some customizations.  Also mentioned was an SU-16 but he wants a pistol grip.  He is also a fan of bullpups so I mentioned a mini-14 in a muzzelite stock.  What does the hive brain think?

An assault rifle is gonna cost him about 10 times more than he is willing to spend.

Calling a semiauto an assault rifle just falls right into the antis trap.  They started the "assault weapon" crap to confuse the two and now they just call them all assault rifles.  When a member here does that, it really shows their bullshit is working.

This one is kinda cool and a little bit different. It`s not a real Galil but looks pretty high qality...as good as anything out there at least.

Looks to be a Yugo M70/Galil hybrid. Finding spares could be a bitch and I have not heard anything about this rifle or builder so I would be leery....

I would tell him to save his pennies ($1500) and get a US made AUG and have a a MB welded on instead of the FS. My .02.

NY still has an AWB. So if he wants something with evil features guess it will have to be a preban.

Actually, we started calling them assault weapons...look in any of the G&A mag's, Soldier of Fiction and such from the late 70's to mid 80's...that was before the popular media even knew what they were, before Patrick Purdy pulled his idiocy, and "saturday night specials" was the buzzword...in the late 80's and early 90's when the media changed their focus from handguns to semi auto rifles we realized, "uh oh, sounded cool before but now they are using this against us" and we started trying to say it was their creation...

As far as your friend, might want to explain to him that if an item is reasonably priced but not very common, it is likely because it is not very desirable for one or another reason...I can say run as fast as possible from the Muzzlelite Mini, when they 1st came out I was much younger and gullible and had to have 1

He's gotta work around what NY allows so preban mag availability, cost and features allowed should be a pretty big concern. What he's got in rifle experience should be too I think. Most guys who atleast are familar with rifles but not military pistol grip type rifles seem to feel pretty comfortable with M14/M1A's as they are very traditional like in feel with fiberglass, wood and laminate stock choices, but still offer serious modern magazine feed, accurate, semiautomatic 7.62x51mm fire.
Older usgi mags that will fit his preban needs can still be found and tens and fives are easy.
He'll need to use a muzzle brake instead of a flash supressor from what I know of that state, but the M14 has good options for that with SA's and Smith's.
In his price range a nice Scout, Standard or Loaded M1A would be a good starting point he can build on as funds allow.

It's something to think about.

I dont see the big deal in calling a semi-auto an assault rifle. If I was talking about full auto the legal term would be machine gun no matter what its configuration was.

An Assault Rifle is a full auto rifle. A machine gun is usually belt-fed, crew served, and designed to be shot from the prone or sitting position (i.e. 1919 Browning, M2 Browning, M249 or M240.)

THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS, PERIOD!

It is a big deal as an assault rifle is select fire, i.e. burst or full auto.  By calling a semiauto an assault rifle, you just contribute to the antis propaganda.

Legal, smegle.  Don't give me that crap.  An assault rifle, such as an M16, is just that, an assault rifle.  While it is a subcategory of machinegun, it is still select fire.

A semiauto AR is NOT an assault rifle.

BTW, assault rifles are covered under NFA, not the stupid 1994 ban nor the ban in your state, even though I do believe NFA items are not allowed in NY, are they?

You are correct on that........damn dumbasses.  However, the antis have sure run with it and have purposely confused the differences between a so-called "assault weapon" and a real assault rifle and now they don't even bother using the "assault weapon" term anymore, they just go straight to assault rifle.  Even an SKS is an assault rifle in the news even though it never even fit the description of a so-called "assault weapon" during the stupid ban.

To have a member of this board say it is "no big deal" really shows their efforts have had the desired effect.

i really didnt want this to turn into a political debate.  I mentioned assault rifle because i did not want to receive suggestions on semi-auto hunting rifles.  I understand the difference between a assault rifle and a machinegun so can we please move on and give suggestions or just delete the thread

If you understand the difference, why did you call a semiauto an assault rifle and why do you persist in defending your use of the incorrect term?

Bogus reason, especially if you know the difference, as you claim to.  It's also not a political debate.  You want to discuss rifles, don't use improper terminology.
