If you want something cheap you can pick up the one from Hoppe's for around $30.  Found a pic HERE in an egay ad

I've had one for 7 or 8 years and it keeps going strong.  I've had to replace the string a few times but that's it.  I threw over 100 clays with it this weekend.

A friend of mine gave me one similar to that, but I always have the problem of it ripping itself out of the ground, even when I stake it down.

I have one of these, Clicky
It is only good if you have someone shooting with you.

It is a very sturdy built unit, I have had mine for almost 5yrs. Although I dont use it hardly at all any more.

The soil where I live holds it well.  If not, I would mount it to an old tire.  My buddy mounted his that way, he also filled the tire with cement.....

I think there is also a cheap fence post gimble type mount and a trailer hitch type mount.

The cheap ones you crank back by hand Are not really worth the Effor might as well throw them by hand in my experience..
Ive seen DO ALL  Brand  Automatic thrower  that are battery or electric operated for $500 activated by a foot switch..

I guess a lot would depend upon if you were shooting with another person or not. Some require a person to manually work the item. So if shooting by yourself it would be cumbersome to launch and shoot.

One recommendation for a clay thrower could be a spouse, but these items can be very very expensive and there is no return policy.

Hey unclemoak,

I would look at the Covey Chucker - a lever operated trap.

Google and yahoo are your friend.

you will find that you get what you pay for.

I can't agree more.  I have one of the cheaper ones mounted to an old wheel/tire but its a PITA to do on your own.

If you're with someone, the cheap red nylon ones can really zip it out there.  Much harder than trap or skeet IMO.

If you have someone to shoot with you, the Hoppe's one works pretty well.  However it won't throw doubles worth a damn, unless you consider throwing one hard right and one hard left as "acceptable" in doubles shooting.

Comparing the $30 Hoppe's thrower to a $500 electric one is like comparing a Kia and a Ferrari.

I have a Trius one step and it works great.  No pressure on the arm while cocking.  I would recommend it.  Hope this helps.

We've got a great DO All brand, it slides right into the hitch of the truck, very handy... i think it was ~$125.... Nice little thrower... it'll throw singles ok, but doubles is a stretch.

I agree.  I also feel like I've got my $30 worth.  I've though about upgrading, but just can't justify it right now.

I have one similar to that now. I think it's made by Outer's though. The thing is a real PITA to cock and keep in the ground, that's why I was looking at something like the Trius One step because there's no tension when you cock it.

I just bolted mine to an old car wheel and tire, rather than stick it in the ground.

Tell me about it!  I shot over 100 clays this past Saturday and I had to pull back and load every single one of them.  My right shoulder and back was definitely sore the next morning and it wasn't from my shotgun.

I helped out the local Boy Scouts this past weekend with a shooting portion of their big events. We had a trap shooting station set up for them. I launched about 300 birds for around 125 kids. I think the kids really enjoyed it. There were quite a few that walked away with a smile on their faces.

You know, every time I've taken a new shooter on an outing, they ALWAYS sport a big shit eatin grin for the next few days.

I've always wondered how many anti-gunners would change their stance if someone took them out for a day of shooting.....Of course, I don't think many would do a complete 180, but it would be a good start.
