Hello- Does the Sig 556 rifle have a chrome lined bore and/or chamber? This question was addressed in a thread but I was not sure if the answer was sarcastic or not, and did not get a follow up response. I have seen it asked on other forums with no answers. Thanks! |
While the bore & chamber aren't chrome lined in the classic sense they are Nitrided, a process that hard coats the barrel in & out. The coating is very hard and wear resistant. Not exactly sure how it stacks up against conventional chrome but you may want to call and ask Sig customer service about it, they may/may not know for sure. |

Good to know. I am really surprised that the sig barrel is not chrome lined, and that their marketing does not at least explain the nitride. If anyone has any info on Nitriding and how it compares to chrome id be very interested. It doesnt seem like it would be as good as chrome if the nitride is the same as that on the sig pistol slides. thanks |
| I was at Shot and asked one of the SigArms engineers (Ethan) the same question. His reply was that the nitride barrel lining is very durable in combination with the cold hammer forged barrel. He said they had 2 test 556s with a round count of 34,000 and 40,000 with very little loss of accuracy (still .75-1 moa). He also said the reason they dropped the quick change barrel feature they had planned to use was because they couldn't get the rifle to group to their standard, although he didn't say what that standard was. |
Did you get the chance to ask him why SIG came out with that abomination instead of the classic 55X series? I'd love me some SIg 551.......I guess I'll wait until SIG gets their act together. |
+1 fugly
