I've seen it in movies and video games, and I've even read it in literature, but does taping two magazines together (one upside down the other) really work for firearms such as AK's and AR-15's (and their respective derivatives)?

Does it really work?  You can sometimes spit rounds out of the downwards facing magazine.  I'd guess it depends on how you define really work.

Allows more crap to enter into the magazine, not always the most secure method, recoil can force rounds forward in the mag, and depending on the weapon it can interfere when in the prone firing position.  Not to mention that not many magazine pouches hold taped or doubled mags.

If you're going to tape magazines together, get a spacer of some kind and tape them so both mags face up.

Gotta be careful when diving to the ground, easy way to jam a whole lot of dirt in there. Other than that (and the possibillty of the mag spewing ammo all over the ground) it works just fine.

MagCinch?

Couple of people in my unit did it (03-06), I always thought it was silly, a "I saw it on TV" mindset.

But then, I linked 600 rounds of blanks (3 belts) together on my gun truck during a CLFX once, it ran to about 500 before it got too clogged to function.

That was b/c I was armorer and helped training w/ ammo, so I could pretty much get away with teh stoopid.

Allot of weight to add.  Originally I had two mags that were cinched together that I used for 3gun.  I quit because made things heavy and akward.

If seen them taped into an L shape before, would help to keep grit out.

This would force you to carry the weight of an extra fully loaded magazine on your weapon. Does that sound like a smart idea?
