IF the number is for example 40 it is the 40th one they yanked out of the box.. Thats how they did it when we got new SAW 249's in 1996, some guns are more important like coax MG's and are given the bumper number of thier assigned vehical.  

I don't think rack numbers mean anything specific at all and their only purpose is to help identify numbers for documentation and insurance purposes.

this is how I knew it to be also. My rifle at Ft Hood was # 310, the 310th rifle in the rack, my rifle in Germany was #42, the 42nd rifle in the rack.

My Bradley's coax 240c was marked D23 for the bumper number. even the drivers night sight was marked D23. The Bolt on the 25mm was etched D23 also.
