I'm lookin to get my first rifle... i've got 3 shotguns, but now i want a rifle.... probly not an AR, but a bolt action, wondering what was good caliber, bbl length..... needs to be cheap.... really cheap.... input? |
| Don't know your definition of cheap but if you are looking at under 200$ and don't want to go C&R route I think you are out of luck. There are center fire lever guns to be had in that price range but I don't know of a bolt gun not C&R that can be had for under 200$. Even the cheaper bolt guns from Savage and Remmy are in the 300-350$ range used. YMMV |

Get a Ruger stainless steel 10-22, a few Steel Lips mags, and a Butler Creek mag loader. Practice for cheap at 25M until you can hit from all positions within an inch. This will allow you time to carefully research your options, an very likely help you avoid buying a rifle that you might not like in the long run. In the meantime, you are improving your skills on the cheap, and the 10-22 will never wear out. Also, you can sample a lot of different rifles from your buddies at the range while you're learning. Don't be a sap and buy a rifle simply because it's available and kinda meets your (ill defined) needs. Be smart, practice with the 10-22, and refine your needs as you do your research. Eventually, the right answer will make itself known. P.S. With ammo prices high, and going up, someday you'll be glad to have the 10-22 as an inexpensive trainer. |
i would do what i did and buy an enfield. .303brit is not as popular a caliber but i think it has a much smoother action and better sights--unless you get a #1mk3 then the sights suck. on the other hand there is more aftermarket stuff for mausers. |

^^AimSurplus has Enfields chambered in .308 nato. I like my Mosin. It is accurate enough to terrorize clay pigeons at 100yds. At .08/rd it is the cheapest thing I have outside of a .22lr. I bought my rifle for 90$ and have gone through ~800rds this year. Otherwise, he might be able to get a 17hmr rifle for >$200, but the ammo isn't really cheap. SKS are ok, probably a little less accurate than the Mosin. If you don't want to shoot a C&R, for a Rem 700 (since you wanted a bolt gun). |
So, just get a bare bones receiver with no parts and buy the parts kit later on slowly buying the other parts as your finances allow...in a years time you'll have a nice customed out AR without killing your budget. |
