I have decided to get a new rifle, and I have narrowed it down to either a SAR-1 in 7.62x39 or a FAL in .308.  Which would be the better choice, buy the AK now? or save up a bit more for a FAL?
Here are my questions.

Effective range?
Recoil?
Price for FAL?
Weight?
Accuracy?

Thanks for input.

You really are comparing apples to oranges.

The FAL has accuracy, range, reliability, and reasonablly cheap ammo.

the AK has reliability, cheap ammo (when availible) and is cheaper.

Personally, i'de have a tough time deciding between the two...but i'de probablly lean towards the AK. Don't know why, but I like the lines of the AK more than the FAL.

I've 'got both' and its a hard decision..

the SAR is more "evil"

What can you tell me about recoil, im a small guy and that will probably make the difference for me, i'd go with a .223, but I need more power.

My FAL is easier to clean then my AK is, with the FAL haveing a rubber pad it's also easier on the shoulder,  but with the adjustable gas settings it was a light recoiling rifle to begin with. The price can be the about same, the FAL is around nine pounds(21" BBl, straight stock), you can get the 16" BBl, with the paratrooper stock to have a light one. Everyone should have at least one 308 battle rifle

mike if your around Houston you can shoot my FAL

After being an Ak guy for about 5 years I've finally sold them all off and I now stick with AR15s and FALs.

FAL = better sights
AK = horrible sights
FAL = uses domestically produced .308, which is also a widely used hunting caliber and NATO standard
AK = uses 7.62x39, imported affordable ammo, prices will go through roof with another War in ME

Many other options.....  Save up for a DSA STG58, and get the Synthetic Handguards for another $50.  Look into upgrading the rear sight to either the Paratrooper peep or another one.  If you stick with the standard sight then you will need to drill out the aperture - no big deal if you have a drill.

Both are decent rifles but if I could only have one it would be the FAL.

The SAR is reliable but is not as accurate as the FAL.

if you want a ak variant go with the siaga .308 you can convert the rifle to look like a AK 103k or how ever you would like( cheak out the siaga vepar forum in the ak section)  they are now coming out with 20rd mags for the siaga. I'm just now is getting really intrested in these weapons. I have a yugo m-70 underfolder, bulgy ak-74 and a m-4 gen.  I was looking a FAL to round off the collection but they are spendy! you can convert customize a siaga for less!

If you want to spend around $500, get the AK and I think there is a better chance you'll be happy than with a $500 Century FAL.  I like my DSA Stg-58 (bottom-of-the-line DSA, but I think the best value) a lot more than my SAR1.  I have shot a nice Arsenal AK, although I forget which model, and that might give reason to compare with a quality FAL.  I would still opt for the longer range, more powerful FAL but it might be a tougher decision.
AKs are great and have a good chance of being a great cheap rifle.  FALs are even better and have very little chance of being a good cheap rifle.
One more thing: I might finally break down and buy a new trigger group for my SAR1 since the trigger slap is far worse than the slightly harder kick of the Stg58.  Factor this in to your cost comparison and make sure you're not buying the $350 WASR.
