I purchased an older Gail McMillan custom .308 with one of his older stocks with blind swivels. On the butt is a removable steel pin about the size of a eight penny nail about two inches long. What's it for?

As in when you put it in your gun safe.  The pin carries the weight of the rile, not the recoilpad.  Just remimber to remove it before you shoot.
