What is this stuff? I understand its basically the same as 5.56. Is it out of production or something? How is it compared to 5.56?

It was the USSR`s answer to our 5.56/223 M16. For way more info try going to the AK side of the boards.

5.45 is an excellent round  - comparable in power to our .223/5.56

here's a quote for you

"5.45*39mm is the new AK-74 round. This round is based on the idea that light weight small rounds can perform as well as the larger bore rifle rounds in combat by "tumbling" once it hits are target, this round is so devasting it has the nick name of the "poison bullet". This advantages of this round are the low recoil, very high velocity, and level trajectory. The disadvantages are its cost is a little more then 7.62*39mm and is not domestically manufactured."

gotcha. Well it sounds great. Looks like the 7.62 and the 5.56 had a kid. I know wolf makes it at 2.99 per 20rd box. Not TOO bad.

Wolf makes it, but 5.45 is VERY hard to find in the States right now. The ammo has been backed up for months, but this will eventually change. Assuming we get a decent flow of ammo from Russia again, 5.45 may go back to being $110 for 1000 rounds, which isn't bad at all. We'll see if it happens though......

BTW, my AK-74 is probably my favorite gun. It has less felt recoil than even a 5.56 rifle, and is VERY quick on follow up shots. Plus, the 5.45 round isn't velocity dependent like 5.56; it depends on tumbling instead of fragmenting to bring down a target.

Thanks for the info for this dummy. Does anyone have an idea on how much longer till its back? How is it compared to the 7.62x39 recoil, speed, range, ets wise?

It supposedly will start coming back in next month. People are somewhat divided as to whether lots will start coming in again, or if 5.45 will continue to be more scarce. In any case, 1000 rounds should cost somewhere in the range of $100-150.... that's my best guess anyway.

As for comparision to 7.62x39, let's see..... 5.45 recoils far less, about the same as 5.56. It travels above 3,000 fps (can't remember the exact number), also like 5.56. Range..well, in Afganistan the Soviets were engaging and killing targets at 400+ yards, though admitedly the stories I have heard mainly involve Spetnatz, who were very highly trained. Remember, the 5.45 round was developed to copy 5.56 NATO, and it is very similar to shoot. If you've fired an AR-15, expect the 5.45 AKs to feel about the same.
