If the gun was fired and put away without cleaning, the barrel might be toast.

First, try this -
- Soak the nipple with penetrating oil for a few day so it will come out.  [hopefully]
- Clean the barrel with hot (boiling is best) water and dish soap to loosen whatever carbon fouling is left from shooting.  Scrub hell out of the barrel with a brush, and run patches through the bore until you've removed everything feasible.
- Get some JB Bore Polish, put on a patch, and run up and down the barrel to remove the remaining rust.  This might take a while, but if the barrel can be saved, the degree of polish will surpirse you.  Clean up with Hoppe's #9, the dry patches.
- Reinstall the nipple and go shoot.  If the gun shoots well, you're done, if not, all is not lost.

If the barrel is shot,
- find a takeoff barrel at

www.americanlongrifles.com ,

www.muzzleloadingforum.com ,

or probably e-bay, or

- buy a replacement barrel from Green Mountain or Thompson Center, and be happy.

If the barrel is really choked with rust, you may better off with a replacement.

Thompson Center has a lifetime warranty on all their stuff.  Call them and they might just replace the whole barrel for you.

I just take the wood from the rifle, then turn on the shower hold the muzzel up to the shower head put  some good dish washing soap(dawn) into the muzzel run a rod up and down with a rag on it!

Then pull that barrel out of the shower, dry it down(then run the big swab dry cotton bore swab down the barrel) when I know it's dry then the other big swab with oil is run home!

Then the other big bore dry swab and patches bring the oil out again!

Just clean it  like this,it's just a smooth bore damn it,clean it and shoot it !  Ounce you shoot it ,it will clean out the barrell!

That gun has a rifled barrel.  Shooting a dirty muzzle loader barrel, rifled or not, will not make it cleaner; WTF!

If the gun was put away dirty and the bore is rusted, then you can bet lunch that the nipple needs attention.
