I want:  A breach plug/threaded sleve for a 50 cal Encore muzzle loader that replicates a 500 S&W chamber so I could just change the breach plug to switch from a muzzle loader to a 500 S&W.  I assume that the throat of the barrel would need to be reamed further foreward to facilitate the cartrige but I don't see that affecting the barrel when used as a muzzle loader.

Is this feasable?  Can I just give a machinest the dimensions or do you see any major road blocks pertaining to pressure?

Better to just run some RDX down the bore and set it off with a det cap.

The rifle loaded with 150G of BP  produces less than half of the 50,000 Plus pounds of pressure that the 500 S&W is going to produce/rated at, and I wouldn't bet my face that the a screw in breach plug is going to hold the fired ammo in the barrel as well without shearing the threads over time.

You really need to spend some time reading on the differances between smokeless powder and Black powder in regards to their burn rate, and the amount of pressure they produce.  Then next move onto breach locking actions and the design/blast pressure they were meant to work with.

To sum it up, here is the load for a 500 S&W,
Note the pressure that the round produces, and do you really think that a screw in type breach plug (read threads worn over time) is going to be safe, much less a barrel that isn't even close to being rated at this pressure to fire this round.

How much more pressure does a 500 S&W generate than a 300 Win?  There are Encores chambered for rounds as big as .375 H&H so I just assumed that I could have an insert that would fit where the breach plug was to create a chamber.  The back of the case would be up against the face of the frame just like if it was a conventional TC Encore centerfire barrel.  I find it hard to believe a revolver could be significantly stronger than an Encore but I'm not a metalurgist (I can't even spell it).

I believe the idea does hold merrit, however I believe it would br cost prohibitive due to the fact that you could by both barrels for $450.

Cost was the original motivator (+ TC doesn't offer a 500S&W rifle barrel).  I figured it would be cheaper to have a piece of stainless spun down on a lathe, threaded and a hole drilled through it than get another barrel, forend and scope mount.  Then if you are in the middle of no where and your muzzle loader components (powder, primers, ram rod etc.) have issues you pull the plug spin in your 500 chamber and load some back up rounds.

Better option would be to just get JD on the phone and ask him how much to make you a new 500 S&W barrel.

The man started his companey producing contender barrels if you didn't know.

P.S. I was thinking Omega rifle when I posted, so the encore frame is more feasible, but still wouldn't want to put that much pressure down a BP designed barrel that was not proofed for those levels.

They have one here for immediate sale.  Bullberry's are pricy, but they are very good!

$389 for the barrel (plus shipping, and $2.10 per shot to burn the S&W 500 factory ammo?

Somehow I don't think that this was the direction that nyeoj want to go.

Yeah, I agree with you.. I belive the direction he wanted to go was, straight to the hospital, or morgue!!

STOP!!! QUIT thining of your project right now.. It will only get you hurt.. The .50cal bbl is no were near strong enough to withstand the presure of the .500 smith...

If you want a single shot 500 smith on the cheap, buy yourself a NEF single shot rifle, and live to see another day..

OK, I'm convinced that this was not as good of an idea as I thought
