first off is there a search feature on the forum?

second i have tried researching this on the web but there is alot of disinformation out there.

question:
i am thinking of purchasing a remington 700 in 308 caliber also would like to purchase an AR10 in 308 cal.

would it be posible to have a gunsmith mil out the head space of the 308 winchesters in order to use surplus 7.62x51mm?

or would this be a waste of time and money? ie the 7.62 will fire and not cause a dangerous situation in a 308cal rifle

thanks and this is a great forum

It is my understanding that it is pressure related and that the 7.62 NATO stuff is not as hot a round as the .308 WIN.

Depending on the response count you get, you may want to ask the same thing over in the AR10 forum or precision forum.

Good Luck

i thimk search comes with a membership

i have seen many people for years shoot 7.62X51 from .308 chambered guns, with no problems, this is not an endorsement from me on this, do so at your own risk, but i have with no problems

the 7.62X51 is hotter

I'm either really forgetful or have been misinformed but I seem to remember a discussion a while back about pressures in NATO rounds vs commercial and the conclusion was that a 5.56 round has higher pressure than a .223.  But in .30 cal the .308 has higher pressure than the 7.62.

Did I just dream this or does someone else remember seeing it?

the main issue is headspacing

a rifle can be in spec for 7.62nato but be out past field reject for .308 win

commercial .308 is usually hotter.

I use milsurp in my 700 ALL THE TIME.  I only had problems with difficult bolt opening one time with a particular import milsurp round.  Don't  remember which.  No primer flow, so I don't think it was pressure.
