I've been looking for a good eather 3-9X40 or 3-9X50 scope for my 30-06 weatherby. whats the difference in the two sizes and advantages. ive been looking at the nikon buckmaster, is that a good one to go with? |

That would be a nice scope. After a certain point its just how much do you want to spend. The x50 scopes sometimes need very high rings also. Dennis Jenkins

The main difference in the two is that the 50mm will have more potential to gather light. I say potential because there are a lot of factors that affect light transmission in scopes including lens quality, coatings, magnification setting, etc. All things being equal, though, a larger diamater objective lens should gather more light which will increase your chances of target acquisition at dusk and dawn. The Leupold website (as well as others I am sure) has a great FAQ section with lots of info on scopes. That might be a good place to start researching. Hope that helps. |
| IMO a 50mm objective is too big for a hunting rifle that will be used, (non sedentary). It throws the balance off & is more prone to hang up & bang into things w/ the larger objective & higher rings. I think 40mm in low rings is optimum for a hunting & stalking predator rifle. Just my .02, YMMV |
| The 50 millimeter scopes are heavy, and require a set of high rngs. I think that they look pretty goofy on a lot of hunting rifles but that is just me. I like the bushnell scopes, the leupolds, and of course the zeiss and swaroski. I think that the best deal in scopes out there right now has got to be the burris fullfield 2. For the money they are a very good scope, and in my opinion much better than a nikon buckmaster. |
