[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 5.56 vs .223 Rem Chamber

I'm sure it's been discussed here, but I can't find it. I pick up a couple of receivers this week and am looking at Mod1Sales for a pistol kit. What exactly is the difference in these 2 specs? I always thought they were the same. Thanks for the info.

5.56 is going to be a little bigger than 223. More "slop" ensures better reliability, buy loses out on match performance.

The larger 5.56 chamber will eat ammo more easily at the expense of a slight loss of accurace in a varmint/target rifle.

BUT, the "problem" of shooting 5.56 in a .223 chamber... I have done this often for years, and never had a problem. Your rifle is not going to blow up.

Got an olympic .223 chambered SS barrel and shoot 5.56 all day long, never had a problem, and never had overpressure signs or violent extractions.

You can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chambers, and despite the SAAMI warnings you can shoot 5.56 in .223 chambers. If you really read the SAAMI warning, it MAY be a problem in SOME .223 chambered rifles.

The AR-15/M16 design is quite robust. Not a problem.

I was shooting some 5.56 in my Rem 700 in 223 Rem,no pressure problems just accuracy!!

Switched to .223 Rem and accuracy got greatly improved!!!

You probably went to a load the 700 liked better. 5.56 NATO ammo is not known for tack driving accuracy.

I heard that there is an "in-between" chamber that is made. True? If so, who offers it and is it chrome lined?
